MacBook competition for the Z6*t series?

#1 Post by K. Eng » Tue May 16, 2006 2:48 pm

Appleinsider has some good pictures of the new MacBook:

I really like the new styling -- its simple and matte black -- like a ThinkPad  I'll have to go to an Apple store to check it out sometime.

the black one is $200 more than the white model though (exactly the same except 80gb instead of 60gb drive)

Looks like they changed the keyboard for more a more distinct feel. And that is matte black, not shiny or patent black at all...Hmmm, of all the widescreens I have seen thus far, I think I could actually mistake that for a Z6X Series system from a short distance away and one look.

Not bad though, I really do like the looks. It reminds me of the black G3 Powerbooks. :)

Don't forget swappable drive bays either, like the G3 Powerbooks.

In fact, if those two features were satisfied...This would be some *serious* competition. :)

the keyboard looks to have been designed by a stylist rather than an ergonomic engineer..
but the proof will be in the feel..

agree with trackpoint and swappable bay comments, above..

beyond that, lenovo now seems to have stiff competition for thinkpads..

and it will run windows, won't it..?

as i said in a previous post, if the apparent quality is the same as the ipod G5 60gig i gave myself (no one else would give me one :( ) last year, then the laptop must be really high quality..

a long way from that very first, prototype apple-II that the two steves showed at homebrew CC at SLAC auditorium, that night so long ago..

IMO the keyboard in the Macbook is much better than the Macbook Pro. The Macbook keyboard has a very tactile feel to it similar to the Thinkpad keyboard. The Macbook Pro keyboard is way too light and sensitive when pressing down for my taste. At time I click the key twice without knowing that I did. As far as size goes. The Macbook can really take way 3/4" from the length and 3/4" from the width, and that would make the size even smaller, because I just think the border around the screen is a bit too wide. If they reduce it, then it would make that laptop very compact and lighter than its current 5.2 pounds. Other than those minor points. The Macbook is an incredibly well built laptop as far as style and design, with a 6 hour battery life. As far as price goes, the Macbook beats the pricepoint of the Z60M hands down, which is an incredible competition to the widescreen model of the Thinkpad.

I concur with redskin. I went to an Apple store yesterday to type on one, and the feedback and key travel on the MacBook is very good.

The MacBook is also very well built, and feels rock solid even when picked up. My only major complaint is that the display is glossy :? Glossy screens look nice, until you can see the glare of ceiling lights in them constantly.

It DOES have easily an removeable hard disk..
