Dead motherboard, X40, anybody know how to fix?

#1 Post by bigtiger » Wed May 17, 2006 3:17 pm

Hi, I like this forum and has been a frequent visitor for about half a year.

Now I have dead X40 motherboard. When I power it up. The fun runs but nothing is on the screen. When I touch the motherboard, the video card (I believe) is very hot. The hard drive does seem to want to spin. That is all I can tell. Anybody know if this is an easy fix? Some suspect that the CPU might be dead.

Thanks everybody.

It'll be under warranty, correct? If so, a motherboard shouldn't take too long to replace. Call IBM and report it. They'll sort you out.

The most cost effective method would be to buy one from e-bay and replacing it yourself.

Or just sell it and get another one.

Out of warranty? Have the X40s been around longer than three years already? If so, wow does time fly...

Either that or your warranty was less than three years? I thought they all carried three years, though...

Thank you, David and JK.

I think I will have to buy a motherboard from eBay which costs around $200- $400.

It has 3 years of warranty and ended the end of 2005. Time flies

Edit: I always mistook it with my X24. It only has one year warranty.

The X40 was introduced in 2/2004. There's no way one of the non-express (one year warranty) models is out of warranty.

Unfortunately, you have an Express model and it only had one year of warranty.

JHEM is correct, the X40 listed in your signature is a 2386-8EU, which only had a 1 year warranty.

Sorry, I made a mistake. yes, you are right. it only has one year warranty. I had a X24. I always mistook it with my X40.
