Can't change power profiles!
Can't change power profiles!
Hey guys,
I've searched the forums and found some similar threads but nothing that has solved this problem for me, I was hoping one of you might be able to offer some advice.
I noticed a few days ago that I was unable to change power profiles using Power Manager. I can, however, change them using the Windows control panel power.cpl ... I have tried uninstalling Power manager, the Power Management Driver, Easy-Eject, Thinkpad Configuration, and Presentation Director. I also went through my registry and manually removed all but the original Windows power profiles, before reinstalling all the drivers and apps I had removed. However, it still doesn't let me switch profiles using Power Manager. I can create new profiles and save them, but to actually switch to them I have to use the Windows control panel power.cpl - after that I can go back to Power Manager and it shows that the new profile is selected, and I can verify that the setting for each profile seem to work. I just can't switch in Power Manager.
Does anyone have any advice? I've tried repairing my Windows installation but that didn't help, I also used jv16's registry cleaner after I uninstalled Power Manager to clean the registry, but that didn't do the trick either.
I hope someone else knows how to fix this ... Thanks for your help! / mavis

I've got exactly the same problem & I've done exactly the same things. Some help would really appreciated!
Another weird thing is all the power schemes were simply just gone some time ago, I managed to import the registry file of the power schemes from a T31 to solve part of the issue. Even till now, my power scheme still doesn't have all the pre-installed ones, like Intervideo WinDVD, Minimal Power Management etc......

Perhaps the modifications you felt the need to do in Windows have impacted other aspects of your system! You could try rolling them back and see what happens.mavis wrote:21 views, no ideas? If anyone has any suggestions, I'd really appreciate it!!

Thanks for the advice, but I really don't think those changes are responsible at all, for several reasons. First, the problems started more than a week after I made those changes, not immediately after. Second, my desktop computer has been running a heavily modified Windows installation (the same changes and then some!) error-free for over a year. If the changes I've made (mainly icon replacement in DLLs) were detrimental to the operation of a computer, I would have known about it years ago. I've been modifying the same files on EVERY Windows XP install I've done since 2001. Finally, just in case the modifications were in fact causing problems, I repaired my Windows installation a few days ago using my installation CD (which has SP2 integrated and hotfixes, etc) ... The problem still remains. There is another thread on the boards with someone complaining of the same problem (no replies on that one) and then Nighthinker in this thread mentioned that he is experiencing this too ... So it looks like it isn't just me (and my modified files) ... Thanks anyway for the suggestion, it is a logical place to start, obviously ...bill bolton wrote:Perhaps the modifications you felt the need to do in Windows have impacted other aspects of your system! Anyway, does anyone else have any ideas?

That's not a "rollback" but you seem to have made up your mind on that topic, so I'll leave you to it.mavis wrote:Finally, just in case the modifications were in fact causing problems, I repaired my Windows installation a few days ago using my installation CD (which has SP2 integrated and hotfixes, etc)

Whoever said anything about a "rollback"? I guess you mean rolling back to out-of-the-box configuration using the rescue and recovery discs I made? That option is not appealing to me in the least (useless apps, wasted HDD space, etc) ... So, I used the repair option on the Windows installation CD. One of the things it does is to restore Windows resources (DLLs, etc) back to their original version ... Apparently you're saying that's not good enough? Once I've used a modified DLL the only way to undo it is to rollback to a factory-fresh state using the rescue and recovery tool from IBM?bill bolton wrote:That's not a "rollback" but you seem to have made up your mind on that topic, so I'll leave you to it.mavis wrote:Finally, just in case the modifications were in fact causing problems, I repaired my Windows installation a few days ago using my installation CD (which has SP2 integrated and hotfixes, etc)

FYI, System Restore brings your computer to a state it was in at a previous point in time, without deleting your data files. You choose the date from what's available. It may be too late to use it now that you have Repaired Windows - I don't know.
To use System Restore, go to Start > Help and Support > Pick a task > Undo changes to your computer with System Restore.
To use System Restore, go to Start > Help and Support > Pick a task > Undo changes to your computer with System Restore.
Microsoft: Help and Support wrote:System Restore automatically tracks changes to your computer at all times and at specific intervals by creating restore points before changes occur. Restore points are stored states of your computer.
You can also manually create restore points to record your computer state and settings before you make changes to your computer. This allows you to restore the computer to a previous state, by choosing a restore point on a date or time prior to when you made the change.

I accidentally came across exactly the same problem, however I have been using Battery Maximiser on my current T40p.Nighthinker wrote:Anything new, mavis? Otherwise, I'll be thinking about "Restore Factory Contents" as I turned off the System Restore Service provided by XP...
Same problems. I only remember that I did a Windows Update (Microsoft Patch day). Now I can not erase/change my own profiles. Bummer. I have no way to stop the hard drive. That function is offline since the windows update.
I just recently lost all my power schemes, too.
Affected areas:
1. NO scheme is available (it's just blank).
2. Can't create any new power schemes. (I can click on the New button, but when finished creating one, it's still blank).
3. If I press Fn+F3, it says I am not authorized to display the panel for selecting a power scheme. (although double-clicking on the battery picture brings it up).
4. Power Options under Control Panel only has Home/Office Desk and Portable/Laptop listed.
This is all under a computer administrator account.
Any ideas?
Also, where exactly in the registry can I possibly try to manually add schemes?

Well, good news and bad news. The good news is that I fixed the problem, the bad news is that it required a complete re-install of WinXP ... I tried everything from un-installing stuff to manually scrubbing the registry - nothing managed to fix the problem, so I decided to make a new nLite install disc and just start over. That, of course, worked wonders. hehNighthinker wrote:Anything new, mavis? Otherwise, I'll be thinking about "Restore Factory Contents" as I turned off the System Restore Service provided by XP...
By the way, here is the thread that explains what to clean in the registry to restore your profiles (and remove unused/corrupt profiles) : http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=9857 If you scroll down to hupsing's post, he lays it all out very clearly .. .I suggest giving that a shot before reinstalling, it didn't work in my case but it has worked for some other people, so ...

It seems I just solved this issue. Same approach as what I did before, just this time, I export the registry from a T43 machine.
Initial D, perhaps you may give it a try:
Just one issue, it seems when u create a new power scheme, it will probably not work-- you may not be able to apply this new scheme in the power manager etc. The solution to it is to change the power policy value in the registry: the export one will have value 0~15, the newly created one will probably have some value like 320 or sth, change it to 16 then.
Give it a try and tell us the result.
Initial D, perhaps you may give it a try:
- go to registry and BACKUP HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Control Panel/PowerCfg;
delete this key;
export the following:Code: Select all

Just one issue, it seems when u create a new power scheme, it will probably not work-- you may not be able to apply this new scheme in the power manager etc. The solution to it is to change the power policy value in the registry: the export one will have value 0~15, the newly created one will probably have some value like 320 or sth, change it to 16 then.
Give it a try and tell us the result.

Well, the problem of this missing power schemes/unable to apply power schemes stuff happend before I installed NHC, so I don't think it's related to that.gunston wrote:are you using Notebook Hardware Control or RMclcok utility?
because, i knew that these programs might have software conflicts with the Power Manager, especially for the missing power schemes.

Nighthinker, many thanks for your help.
I now have a fully functional Power Manager! I don't mind just editing some of your profiles to my own taste, so adding new ones isn't a problem.
Thanks Again!

I'm naive about where that "Description" field is used, but since the base Windows ones had values, I added some to mine. And made the "Timers Off" editable to see if I could edit it after a reboot. Boy, that'd be handy. I'm half-tempted to delete the default IBM schemes now that I have some of my own.
Now if I could only change the icons that appear on the FN + F3 pop-up menu....
