I have a ThinkPad R51-2887RU1 and I am wondering if I can put a external attenna on it. Also, is it possible to replace the CPU with a Pentium?

CPU for sure, I popped a 1.5GHz in mine. Longer battery life and faster.

Probably both, it's quite easy, basically you remove the keyboard and swap cpu's.

This FAQ will lead you to the hardware maintenance manul for the R40 with step by step instructions.
