Targus Mobile 70 AC/DC Adapter for a T41P?

#1 Post by Tsuioku » Thu May 18, 2006 6:13 pm

I read from Jsmit86's thread that the Targus Mobile 70 has problems charging the T42 but does anyone know if it also applies to the T41P or if the issue has been resolved yet?

You can view his thread here: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... rgus+power

If it does not work in T42 it will not work in T41p.

But the original ones are cheap buy it from ebay or levono.

The thread was from 2 years ago so I am just hoping that the problem has been fixed.

In Jsmit86's alt thread in Notebook forums, someone mentioned that the Kensington and the Targus appear to be from the same OEM since accessories were interchangeable and concluded that the problem may be the power "brick"

I am currently getting a replacement for my PAPWR300U from Targus since it came with the wrong DC cable. Targus is currently offering me the Mobile 70 AC/DC Adapter. I would sell the replacement but after looking on ebay, it doesn't look like there are any sellers willing to ship to Canada.

Targus adapter

So... here is the interesting thing. My Targus works fine with T40's. I am not certain about T41s. I have both a Targus and a Kensington, that exhibit the same behavior with T42s.

If you connect the adapter with the Thinkpad totally off or hibernating, it will not charge that battery, or power the PC if the batter is out of the pc. If the Thinkpad is on, or in suspend, it charges fine.

I have used both adapters a lot, but I do not travel with them in case I ever had a totally dead battery, I would be SOL to charge it!

I am pretty certain that both the Kensington and the Targus were OEM'ed by Mobility Electronics. They are the people who make the IGO units.

When I last contacted Targus, the tech support was not very helpful. I would like to know if this quirk has been fixed.

I also have the IBM AC/DC 72 watt unit. It works great, but it is very big and heavy. I know that Mobility now also OEM's the new IBM unit, which is supposed to be smaller than the old IBM AC/DC unit.

I purchased a Targus AC (not ac/dc) adapters today after my cats chewed my original adapter to death.
Its working fine with my T42 and has none of the startup problems described.
My machine cold boots without needing the battery and the battery charges as usual.
