T4x .vs. T4xp
T4x .vs. T4xp
Does have any advice re: advantages of the T4xp series (w/FireGL) video .vs. the T4x (w/various flavors of Radeon) video?
I'm planning on getting a T4x/T4xp and since I don't use
AutoCAD, ProEngineer, et al..., is there any advantage (other than video memory size) in spending the additional $$$ for the 'p' version?
Also, are the FireGL drivers completely compatable w/Directx?

Firegl drivers, yes, are completely compatible with directx
The only other advantage is the extra video memory that comes with them for someone that does not use the firegl's benefits.
The 15" ones also have the IPS screens (which have their ups and downs, generally people find more benefits with them though) for their SXGA+ and UXGA resolutions (1400x1050 and 1600x1200)

The T4xp models come with their respective high resolution LCDs (SXGA+ and UXGA+ and IPS) along with better video cards with more video memory. Normal T4x have the option of (radeon 7500/9000/9600/x300, where as the T4xp have firegl 9000/firegl T2 128.
Other than that maybe more memory, 7200rpm harddrive, better wifi cards installed (like b/g instead of just b). But all of these options can be upgraded yourself.

I have an top model T43 [Pentium M 2Ghz, 1,5GB Ram, 80GB 5400RPM drive, X300 64MB Graphics, 15" SXGA+ Flexview screen] and its an great machine, my wife has tvo brothers one off them has an T43p and the other an T42p. I can not see any difference in performance with their machines over mine, then I mean visual difference doing day to day computing. Personally I find the SXGA+ resolution better then the UXGA mainly because I use glasses and that resolution suits me better.
So if you are concernt about the extra $ you have too spent on the T43p , then I would take the T43 without an second thought but if you need the bigger resolution and better video performance then the T43p is the way to go or simply get an T60?

I second the opinion of Gustavo -- sort of. I've got an A31p, upgraded to the 2.6GHz Mobile P4, with the 15" UXGA FlexView display -- and a T41, upgraded to the Pentium M 765, with the 14.1" XGA display. The T41 is as fast as my friends' T43 systems, but I do wish I had the bigger, more dense UXGA display on my T41. The tight pixel pitch of the 15" UXGA is just about at the limit for my eyesight, though -- so a happy medium might be the 15" SXGA+ LCD, or maybe the 14.1" SXGA.
