Replacing the hard drive in a Thinkpad T22

#1 Post by GrimReaper » Wed Aug 04, 2004 5:09 am

I'm currently in the process of upgrading my current laptop to more memory, bigger hard disk etc.

What is the maximum storage size hard disk that the Thinkpad T22 can handle?

For example, it currently has a 20GB hdd in.. i'm wanting to get the largest storage size possible for it. (I assume a bog standard 2.5" IDE hdd should work fine, ata33.. I believe the max the ide controller can handle is ata33)

There's no limit on the T series as to HD size, so you can use the current crop of 80GB drives.

IDE controller in the Tx series supports up to 120gb HD. I think someone makes a 100gb but thats all we are up to yet. Next year they will have bigger ones.

seagate announced 7200rpm 100gb models in ATA/100 and SATA/150 flavors.   i haven't seen them available for sale yet.

I'm pretty sure the 100GB Seagate Momentus HDs are 5400RPM, not 7200RPM.

It's going to be a while yet before you see them available as they're having some teething problems. Look for them this fall.

Okay, i've since gotten 512MB of ram for my laptop and am now looking for a larger harddisk.

I'm wanting something which is at the least double my current drive (20GB) but ideally lower power usage.

The current drive is a 4200rpm ata33 drive. (Hitachi DK23EA-20B)

I'd prefer lower power usage over speed.

I've been looking on ebuyer.co.uk at a few 40GB+ drives.

If anyone wants to recommend a low power drive then please do.

EDIT: The drives in particular I am looking at are the Seagate ST94811A and the Samsung MP0402H. (both 5400rpm 8MB cache)
At the moment i'm leaning in favour of the Samsung because it uses slightly less power.

Personally, I'd go with the Hitachi/IBM 80Gb 5400rpm drive ($160-$180). It has 8Mb cache and runs very cool and quiet in my T4x. Remember, whatever you think is storage overkill today will be inadequate in 12 months!

Hmm, the Hitachi travelstar uses slightly less power than the Samsung equivalent but is a 4200rpm. (The samsung is a 5400rpm)

On ebuyer the Samsung is out of stock so looks like i'll buy the 80GB Hitachi Travelstar.

You think the travelstar is quiet?

Isn't that the harddisk that everyone has been complaining about - what with the constant clicks and such?...

and no, the hitachi disk isnt 4200rpm, its 5400...
