Not to quibble, but just because they power on doesn't mean that it works. There could be eeprom errors or passwords.
Correct though, that the price with a good working LCD, as well as the base, keyboard, etc. is worth it.
In my head, I am just thinking worst case scenario:
T21 with dead board - $125
Working T21 board - $50
Decent hard drive (~40gb) - $40-50
HD Caddy - $20
256-512mb ram - $40-100 (if lucky)
Battery - $40-60
Total with working board: $265-355
Total w/out working board: $315-405
I know that AlphKilo470 has a few spare parts, which will save on the costs though.

I sent the guy a message, asking if they had any passwords on them, and they responded that none of them were locked down.
I also just ordered 5 of them, so we'll see.
If I get 5 good LCDs, and 3 good motherboards, I'll be kinda happy. Shipping (FedEx Ground) was only $20, for all 5, from Houston to Phoenix.

Hi. My name is Rick. It's been 19 days since I bought a used Thinkpad. It has been hard, but I'm taking it one day at a time. I'd like to thank...

Well, I'm covered on the 5 I got, for ALL the parts I'd need to get these ready to sell. Unfortunately, I don't have much extra memory, and am hanging on to what I have.
Look for some PC133 of the 128 size. I am able to get this to run in the T20-22 stuff, but if you want the 256 size, it needs to be the low density PC100 stuff.

Great news, James! Except you hid it in a Sticky, (Don't you know, the best way to hide anything, is to put it in a sticky?JHEM wrote:Coolname1 and Skou,
Read the sticky I posted in the T2X forum WRT using PC133 memory from Crucial.
No more searching for expensive lo-density PC100 memory!

I bought a couple of these ... one for a friend of my daughter & one for playing with. Unfortunately the two I received have broken keyboard bezels ... even at $110/each it doesn't seem to make sense to fix these up.
I guess what I'll do instead is turn both of these into digital photo frames. Unfortunately I had already ordered the battery/hard drive cover, so if anyone is interested in any of my unused/leftover parts, let me know.

[censored]! That's a shame as the two I received can, at worst, be described as in B+ condition, In fact, I'd rate the one I'm typing this message on as an A-, except for the "springy" keyboard that will soon be replaced with a new one.kodell wrote:I bought a couple of these ... one for a friend of my daughter & one for playing with. No HDs, drive covers, memory, optical drives, batteries, etc., and that's exactly how they were described and what I expected to receive. But no broken/cracked/loose bits either. Both have combo NIC/Modems installed.
I guess it's purely the luck of the draw.
Yes, I'd be very interested in any leftover plastic bits you wind up with after you finish your conversions.

James

Since the ebay sale specifically said that all bezels were intact, I contacted the seller about the two units I received with broken keyboard bezels & got a nice response in return offering a $15 rebate on each unit and shipping out replacement bezels.
I declined the rebate, but accepted the bezels. Anyway, seems like a pretty decent vendor.

The screws are in place and tight and I HATE stuffing things under the keyboard, especially when I've got a pretty good stock of new replacement keyboards.skou wrote:James, you might just need to put the screws in the keyboard, or put spacers underneath it.

Well, out of the 5 I got, 3 of them have perfect screens, no dead pixels, and no bleeding or pressure spots. The other 2 have MINOR pressure spots, which is real surprising for the T20-22 stuff, since they have the grid stuff on the back of the outer LCD cover. (That is what causes the "keyboard" spots.)
I'm REAL happy on the whole deal, except I wish I could have gotten about 25 more!
