T20 - no sound

#1 Post by Orevin » Fri May 19, 2006 7:55 pm

Ok, here I have hard nut to crack.
I installed WinXP on this T20 and it has no sound. The drivers are installed and correct. The speaker symbol shows up in the taskbar and I can adjust the volume, but still no music.
Out of curiosity I did boot from a Linux live CD (Knoppix) and what should I say, the sound worked!
Does anyone have an idea why I can't get a tone in Windows?

Thanks,
-Orevin-

Just curious, and I know that you work on on Thinkpads daily, but have you tried continually pressing the keyboard volume controls?

Thanks for the reminder, but that was the first thing to did. And as I said, I can hear music under Linux...
I removed and reinstalled the drivers. There are now drivers for XP available from IBM, as they come with the OS. I downoaded the software for W2k, but the same thing. A new instalation of WinXP didn't help either...

Hello has anyone found a solution to this problem? I have updated from 98SE to XP on a T20 and now have no sound. Device manger shows no problems with sound drivers. I have tried ME, 2000 drivers but still no sound.

Welcome to thinkpads.com!

Sanity check:

- Double click the speaker icon in the system tray and make sure that all of the source sliders are mid-level and not muted; same for the Master Volume
- Press the keyboard's volume up button a couple of times
- Verify that you can play a music CD and hear the sound from YouTube clips or other streaming audio

If that doesn't help, then verify that the hardware is still good by either using a different OS or running the PC Doctor diagnostic, downloadable from here in a three diskette format:

or here in a CD .ISO format:

Thanks for your reply. I ran the diagnostics and it passed everything. I used to scan hardware and it states sound card is installed but not configured. None of the sound controls are muted. The volume keys don't seem to do anything.

Did you also update/install all of the T20 drivers/utils/etc. from IBM/Lenovo?
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
