How good does x60s perform in noise control?
I feel x60 is too noisy. How good does x60s perform in noise control? Is x60s better a lot or just a little bit ?
Re: How good does x60s perform in noise control?
We have a few of each model in my office and they are all (including mine) very quiet, cool and stable. We have a lot of computing time on them and we are very happy.delilah wrote:I feel x60 is too noisy. How good does x60s perform in noise control? Is x60s better a lot or just a little bit ?

the noiseiest part of my personal X60 is the "click" of each key depression..delilah wrote:I feel x60 is too noisy. How good does x60s perform in noise control? Is x60s better a lot or just a little bit ?
my my it is SO noisy that my readhead wife
ok, come ON, this is one silent machine..
and, for real, the key click is the most noisy part..
by which i mean to say that overall it is superquiet..
i don't know what you are using, maybe your X60 has a noisy HDD..?

Re: How good does x60s perform in noise control?
But my roommate and other users all complain about the high frequency noise sound like the one emitted by the electric current. Of course it depends on the background noise. If you work in a quiet room, the noise is easily noticeable.BillMorrow wrote:the noiseiest part of my personal X60 is the "click" of each key depression..delilah wrote:I feel x60 is too noisy. the x60s is quieter than my x40. I do not have the clicking noise from my keyboard anymore. The fan does come on, but is very light activity and noise. No high pitch frequencies yet. I won't notice the latter till later as use of any electronic I use tend to emit something eventually.
thinkpad x40, type:2372-9EU, (2x) 512MB, 40GB HD (4200rpm), 802.11abg, CDC bluetooth
thinkpad x60s, type:1702-94U, (2X) 512MB, 40GB HD (5400rpm), 802.11abg, Ultralight LCD.

My X60s is fairly quiet. I have pretty sensitive hearing, and often hear things that others don't, so you may want to take my impressions with a grain of ... well, not salt, but a grain of something that has good hearing.
I do not hear the hard drive at all when the machine is in the ultrabase unless I put my head down next to it. Out of the dock, I can hear the HD when it's booting or doing something drive-intensive such as a virus scan. It's pretty neglible, though.
The fan comes on surprisingly often, and it's a constant low rushing sound. Not particularly loud, but it is noticeable in anything but a fairly silent room. Right now, I'm in the living room and my wife is down the hall, listening to music on the other PC, and I can hear the fan over that.
The keyboard is relatively quiet. People will know you're typing but they won't feel the need to throw hard looks in your direction.
Overall, the machine is quiet but I would not say silent. On a scale of 1-10, 10 being a typical desktop and 1 being silence, I'd say it's a 2.5 or 3.

I spent a lot of time in very quiet library. I use t40 and x60 there and x 60 has much louder fan than my t40. Even with fantool when it runs on speed 1 the x60 fan is heard throughout all room, while the fan of t40 is on speed one, almost no sound, just something like very quiet sweet puring of the cat - the x60 sounds at the same speed of of fan (around 2300rpm) almost like a little vacuum cleaner. Unpleasent higher pitched noise. I can compare the sound of the fan in t40 to putting a dor (a dung-beetle) close to your ear (it is kind of soft pleasant snuffling and puffing). The sound of X60 fan is nothing like that, it reminds me of a miniature lawnmover - I cant stand that irritatating sound for very long and it is one of many reason I decided to get rid of the x60 in the final run.
The Hardware manual of X60 tells me there are three different types of fan used in x60 and mine has the standart normal voltage (other two are lower voltage fans).
Besides, the x60 with t2400 processor never gets bellow 45 degrees Celsius and while networks is on and a little activity is going on it goes quickly to 60 degrees and above and the fan is on and off every few minutes couple of times unless you use fantool - and even with that you can't avoid the fan to start after some 15 minuts of very minimalistic use.
It may be different experience with x60s and the L processors but in fact what heats most is not only processor but the GPU as well.
On the t40 the fan is almost not heard unless the highest speed is started, when 100 percent processor power is utilized. And even than, it is pleasant murmuring deep warm sound. The sound, in my opinion, is often an individual case of each fan. Besides, each processor and GPU, even of the same type, heats up differently and it is matter of luck to get the one that heats less and makes the fan run less often.
Also the SATA hard drive is much louder in my opinion than the ATA in t40. X60 with the SATA drive somewhat vibrates all the time and in quiet library it makes the whole table resonate in unpleasantly pitched sound unless I put some soft material in between the desk and the notebook. (I am a recording engineer and give a lot of attention to sounds). The ATA drive in T40 vibrates less while working than the idle SATA in X60. Besides that issue the x60 hard drive keeps clicking no matter what is happening in the background - I did not investigate that issue of what process is causing that - but I did not had that clicking problem ever with t40 and t43p.
In all the above I am talking of just the situations when I read and write in some notepad type application and being connected through wifi to net. Using t40 is far more pleasant in terms of sound in quiet rooms.
When in the airports, public rooms, offices, planes etc - you simply do not hear any sound at all coming from either of the two. It only matters when we speak of very quiet environment and here my t40 is by far the winner in terms of sound. Meaningless to say, probably, that both are indeed much, much more queiter than any standard desktops, no doubt about that. The volume of desktops is in completely different category.
Using t40 in quiet room to me is similar to reading and writing with pen and paper. It is very close to being as quite as a book. No way to say that about x60. I should add that this is not the only t40 I owned and the other t40 I tested were more or less similiarly silent. T43p was worse and x60 is clearly the worst of all thinkpads I ever owned, especially in term of sound emitting.
There is one more thing to add about the noise, even when fan and HD stops there is some electrical buzz coming from the x60, very low volume but unpleasant in long run anyways. I had that sound with t43p too, but not at ll with t40 - t40 is as quiet as death when fan and HD stops, not even the slightest buzz.
One last note I wish to add (little offtopic) is that in my opinion what comes after t4* is simply downfall of thinkpad. I do not believe in Lenovo at all, having used so many different thinkpads, the pinnaccle to me is t40.
Given that the new t60 can be bought directly from Lenovo for less than USD1000, it is clear indication of their direction. I preffer to pay double and get the perfection, but sorry no option any more. The attention to detail is gone. The parameters are there, but the whole build and the lack of attention to the machine in many little details indicates a a rush to make money - which is what Lenovo is succeeding enormously compared to IBM in the past. Even when just talking about the appearance, when I put the x40 t40 and x60 next to each other and make a closer look, the X60 stands out in its cheap look - it does not have the pure perfection design and finishing of t40 or x40 - it looks similiar in pictures and from the distance but next to each other it does remind me of a poor cousin.
I really wonder what other thinkpad is as quiet as my t40 with similiar power and hopefully smaller size and weight - any suggestions?
Since the Lenovo direction I seriously play with an idea to get some fanless notebook from a competition. Has anybody any experience with that?
Cheers
