Two unknown devices

#1 Post by bilalmuddassir » Sat May 20, 2006 3:46 am

I didn't install the OS from recovery disks but used another OEM CD. I have been able to put drivers for everything on my T42 2374-K5U except that there are two devices still with yellow ! sign.

1. USB controller
2. Unknown device

And I am wondering what those are. Can anyone help?

Secondly,

Windows got installed in D: drive while C: drive is being shown as IBM_SERVICE partition? Should I delete and merge this with Windows partition?

I would start again with the correct CD if possible. It sounds like your install went wrong. You certainly should not have Windows on Drive D: from a correct OEM install. ... JD Hurst

Well is there a way to switch the drive letter?

If I merge the service partition with this partition, will this happen automatically?

Probably the IR port, bluetooth or the Biometric Reader if you have either of them.

Changing the drive letter will most likely lead to major problems due to the values already stored in the registry.

I agree with JDHurst, start again and delete/repartition your drive correctly before reinstalling.

I called up IBM technical support and they will ship me a new set of recovery disks and I have the following question now:

If I delete all partitions on my hard disk and start with the recovery disks, will the hidden service partition be automatically created?

Why don't you use the disk management feature in xp and delete all partitions and reinstall xp after that first thing install the ibm software installer and let it install the required drivers. That will work.

i have a similar problem. i just started working at a company that has a lot of T41 and T42 laptops. no one has any idea where the original restore CDs are, and whenver I reinstall windows on one of the thinkpads, i'm able to find drivers for all devices on the lenovo site. however, i end up with two "yellow question mark" devices in device manager, one ethernet adapter and one USB controller. this is bizarre, because normal entries for both ethernet and USB show up elsewhere in device manager.

it doesn't seem to create a problem, it's just strange.

A company should always get the restore CD's. I do that for my clients. That said, at least on of each model should be working reasonably properly. Turn it on, press F11, reimage it, build out your model, and then make your own CD's with Ghost. I do that to, and it saves time if there is a hardrive crash or whatever. Using original windows seems to me to be a waste of time (judging from the questions in this forum). ... JD Hurst
