On 14.1" Display

#1 Post by bessel » Sat May 20, 2006 9:09 pm

It's been heatedly debated which one among Samsung, Hydis and TMD is better than the others. I have done a little research on google and found the following.

The performance of a LCD panel is largely determined by three factors: contrast ratio, luminence and response time. Viewing angle is a bit vaguely defined so I do not want to quote the numbers.

Samsung: 300:1, 175 cd/m2, 25ms
Hydis: 200:1, 150 cd/m2, 25ms
TMD: 250:1, 200 cd/m2, 50ms

It looks to me that Samsung is the best combination of the three. As regards the rest two, if you do games/movies a lot, response time is more important for you, so Hydis is more preferrable, otherwise, TMD is better. Hope this elucidates things.

My observation reveals the noticeable difference betweent the data / reports / etc and the actual experience of using these three displays. I have used each of these and found the differences to be smaller than suggested by the research.

Hope this does not exacerbate peoples decision making. :P

I received my 2007-63U with Samsung SXGA+ 14.1" display today.

It absolutely craps on my old R40 14.1" XGA display for overall brightness, contrast and colour saturation (I had been lowering the gamma on the R40 to try and get more colour saturation).

And no dead pixels as far as I can see (only had it running for an hour :P)!

All right, I have personally tried TMD and Samsung, and I was able to put them side by side. Now I can supply you guys something more concrete.

Samsung looks a bit blue, but very slightly, more apparent when you look from the side. As regards TMD, the image looks totally twisted when you shift your head a bit.

Colors are not as homogenous on TMD as on Samsung. I spot big patterns on the supposedly solid color Firefox tool bar with TMD display. A huge minus! No such problems with Samsung.

Samsung is sharper and brighter than TMD. Very noticeable to me.

Samsung has wider viewing angles. It does respond faster (tested with some games).

Overally speaking, f I define 100 as my full satisfaction, I'd give Samsung 80 and TMD 65.

Hi,

It seems I can't find the appropriate thread: how did you reveal your panel's manufacturer?

Brgds, Torsten.
