Buy preconfigured or Let me Build it?

#1 Post by mattfromomaha » Wed Aug 04, 2004 1:42 pm

I'm evaluating the purchase of a T42 to replace my T30. I was initally considering the 2373-JTU (http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/defaul ... EDC=645391), but then I went to IBM's "Let Me Build It" website and configured my own system to the same basic specs as the JTU, added the 3-year onsite warranty and the $89.00 combination pack Lexmark printer and 128MB memory key (key for me, printer for sister), and found that the custom-built package was actually cheaper than I can get the JTU for once I add the onsite warranty to the JTU (plus I don't get the printer/memory key)!

Now, this seems odd to me that it's cheaper to build your own computer than to buy a preconfigured model. Any ideas what gives? Is there a software difference or anything? Do they strip certain features like the ASP from the custom-built or something?

Also, what are your thoughts on returning custom-built models vs. preconfigured? I'm the type that likes to [censored] about dead pixels and the like, so if there's any flaw IBM will get the machine back...

Oh, here's the configuration of what I built online:
ThinkPad T42 (IBM Think Express Program) 2378EUU
40GB 5400rpm Hard Drive 09N4232
IBM 11a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Adapter 31P9705
512MB PC2700 CL2.5 DDR SDRAM SODIMM (T Series Bulk) 31P9838
ThinkPad T40/R50 Series Li-Ion Battery 31P9857
IBM Integrated 56K V.92 designed modem 73P2814
Microsoft Windows XP Professional 73P2891
ThinkPad CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo II Ultrabay Slim Drive 73P3289

Accessories and Options Selected
Warranty service upgrade; 3 year onsite repair 9x5/next business day 30L9195 $206.55
Discount Lexmark Z615 Inkjet Printer and 128MB Memory Key for Express W7PNTME $89.00

Total damage to my Visa: $2,253.97 for the custom-built
versus ~$2,163 from bill plus $200 warranty upgrade for the JTU.

Thanks for your help!

Matt

build your own is just as easy to return... just no exchange.. means you have to return and place a new order...

Wow, that's interesting, could be any number of reasons why it worked out this way. Component prices change, some things are more vairable than others. I wouldn't hesitate and get the one that's cheaper and has more stuff - sounds like a no brainer to me!

How much faster will the T42 be than the T30, do you think?

I'm betting it will be a little faster, but I'm mainly looking to switch because of the extra batter life and smaller form factor...
