CD won't spin (UltraBay 2000 on R31)--new HD connection?

#1 Post by AlphaGJohn » Wed Aug 04, 2004 1:42 pm

Hi Folks,

The CD ROM drive on my R31 appears to be broken. However, I just upgraded the HD to a larger one and it now has a second active partition (C:, CD is D:, new HD partition is E: ). The E: partition works fine. The recovery portion of the HD is still there and in the same spot it was on the prior drive. (And it seems to work; it shows up as an option at bootup and you can choose it and have it start the recovery process.)

The last time I used the CD (which could have been quite a while, I don't remember for sure), the CD worked fine--but it won't spin the CD now; I'm not sure if I'm hearing the drive motor hum a bit when it tries to read from the drive, but Windows concludes that there's no CD in the drive. I thought perhaps the new HD was using more current than the old one and there's not enough juice to spin the CD, but that seemed a stretch--especially since I think the power rating on the new drive is lower than the old one....

Auto troubleshooting app from the IBM troubleshooting section of their site says the CD drive needs professional attention. It passed the eject test; failed the read test (even after reseating it--which I've done a bunch of times).

So, has anyone ever heard of activating additional partitions or putting in a bigger HD affecting the CD--or, as I suspect, did it just happen to die either before or while I was in there fiddling with the HD?

Here's the run-down on the box:

R31 2656-M2U refurb model about 16 months old
Win XP Pro
New HD is a Samsung 40 GB which appears to work great (faster and quieter than the original Travelstar drive)

Thanks for any insight!

John

Spontaneously started working again....

Well, no one had any suggestions on this (no surprise), but the CD drive has started working again. Very odd. I took the laptop with me on a road trip to LA--maybe it just needed a vacation .... brother!

At any rate, it's back functional again. Nice but puzzling.
