If you swap the connector and plastics. I have a DVD drive in my 600E that was originally from a T series but I swapped the connector, plastics and bezel with the CD drive from my 600E and it works fine.

An unmodified T series optical drive won't fit at all.

Thanks for the fast reply.I have picked up another 600x from ebay without cd or dvd ,since I have read it's really not that great to watch dvds on them I should maybe just get the cd.But it seems like the actual 600x ones sell for more.(supply & demand?)Do the programs for dvds work ? thanks

Yes. I don't know where you read that the 600X was no good for DVDs. As far as I know, they are just fine. Most 600X machines are PIII 500MHz or better, which is plenty fast enough for good laptop DVD performance. The screens are not perhaps as large or as bright or as mult-angle-viewing-enabled as the latest laptops, but you should not have trouble watching DVDs with a 600X unless the computer is misconfigured.

I just took a dvd/cdrw out of a micron brand laptop ,just swapped everything over no prob..front cover of dvd dont match great and i had to shave a little plastic off the front cover bottom to get the thinkpad "pull" out on right,a little flat black paint and nobody knows !!
i have a 600 with a dvd/cdrw from i dont even know what it came out of,,didnt have any mounting rails at all, just has to have the CORRECT internal connection "socket" i call it..i have an old compaq 1200 that has same socket..from what i can tell there are many that will fit once stripped down to put the ibm mounting on....
i must say i have seen a couple that wont work tho..but it seems 90% of "vintage" stuff will....would be a good subject for a poll i think..
