IPS Core Service

#1 Post by astro » Tue May 23, 2006 9:11 pm

I just noticed this on my T60:

IPSSVC.exe
CPU: 0%
PF Delta: 865
Mem Usage: 3,576K
VM Size: 2,096K

The PF Delta figure does not go below 865 -- how is that possible?

More details:
Service name: "IPS Core Service"
Description: None
Startup: Automatic

IPSSVC.exe properties --
Company: Lenovo
File Version: 1, 0, 0, 0
Product Name: "Away Manager"

What does it do and why does it keep page faulting?
Does the page faulting affect performance?

Questions:
1) Is there no fluctuation in these values?
2) Is this at idle?

1) Yes, it does fluctuate when you are doing things
2) Yes, the PF Delta stays at some constant value when nothing else is happening.

I figured out what it is, though. It is the "ThinkVantage Away Manager" (I finally looked in the ThinkVantage folder..). It "schedules system tasks to run when you are not doing any work" -- things like defrage, disk cleanup, MS anti-spyware (shudder)... Thanks, but no thanks. Un-installed it as soon as I figured that out.

I concur, I'm throwing my "Away Manager" away! How fast can I say Un-install? :)

IPSSVC.EXE high CPU utilization

#5 Post by marshiedad » Wed Jun 07, 2006 1:15 pm

Glad Astro identified IPSSVC.EXE is associated with Away Manager as not much was found except it is related to IPSec service when I googled such process. Anyway, when I let my one month old T60 (2623-D6U ) on standby for a couple days, IPSSVC.EXE would consume about 50% of CPU usage. I noticed this condition at least twice now and email Lenovo Support yesterday. Has anyone experienced this and is it safe to un-install Away Manager?

Thanks

I've been wondering where my disk space is going of late and when I checked the used space vs. file and folder totals on my data partition I was amazed to see that I was missing 11GB of space. It appears that Away Manager has been running R&R when I'm not looking.

Now I'm in the process of moving those backups off to external HDD and DVD to get my working space back.

I don't mind Diskeeper doing its thing behind my back, but multi-gig backups is another story.

Thanks for the heads up. I would never have guessed that the backup would automate itself.
T'Pad 600e, 770x, A20p, A21p, A30p, A31p (2653-H3U), T43p (2668-Q2U) & T60p (2623-DDU)...it's an addiction.
