Presentation director fails to restore desktop

I have a T60p (1600x1200). I used the presentation director to set the display to 1024x768 to connect to a projector.

When I restored to the "My Normal Display Settings" two things were wrong:

1. The desktop picture changed

2. All of the icons were smushed back into the previous 1024x768 footprint.

I have had this work as expected (putting everything back the way it was) but it hasn't worked right recently.

Any ideas?

I forgot to mention, the same thing happens on my T42p.
