Install new OS (XP) on t23

#1 Post by gpomroy » Wed May 24, 2006 2:21 pm

Hello all,
This is my first post, so please bear with me. I tried the FAQ's and searced other posts to find the answer, but nothing that i've found tells me exactly what i need to know. Here's the scenario. I have a ThinkPad T23 with Win 2000 installed. I want to wipe out the harddrive and install XP. However, there is a lot of IBM software (Access ThinkPad for example) and PC doctor, and that stuff that I do not want to lose. The steps to doing this from the IBM website, are long, tangly, and in no way easy - at least that i can figure out - and i am no stranger to computers. Will I lose the battery gauge and that stuff. I think you see what I'm getting at. I apologize if the anwer I'm looking for is already on this site, but I was unable to find it. Thanks to all in advance for any help you can offer.

Install XP, then install and run the IBM/Lenovo Software Installer program.

Follow the instructions here without installing any of the drivers.

Then install and run the Software Installer.

Will this procedure work in reverse by interchanging XP W2K? I have a friend who jus aquired a T23 with XP and would prefer W2000. The claim is that it is smaller and faster and there is nothing he wish to run under Windows that doesn't work in W2000.

Would you be so kind as to tell me why you prefer XP to W2000? I ask because a friend has received a T23 with XP and would prefer W2000. The claim is it's smaller and faster. What is yoour take on this?

Hi there...i suspect that your friend is correct in the assumption that win 2000 will run a little faster, and most software will run perfectly fine on the 2000 platform. My reason for upgrading to XP is that i find it easier to communicate with my work pc and my home pc when all are using the same operating system. No other reason. Even for this, i do not NEED to upgrade to win xp..but i find it more convenient. if your friend finds 2000 to be sufficient, i would indeed suggest that he go ahead and install 2000.

I belive XP has better hardware support. I had 2000 on my T21 and I had to use twain drivers to hook up my camera. With XP, it recognized it right away and saw it as a drive. XP was also easier to get my wireless card working.

XP may have more bloat than Windows 2000, but you can click a setting to have XP run in the Windows 2000 interface which takes up less resources.

Good points there, and quite true. Also, since I have installed XP (the installation went quite smoothly thanks to James), I have disabled a bunch of "unnecessary" XP services, which should increase the performance of my laptop under the XP platform.

I did ask if, "Will this procedure work in reverse by interchanging XP W2K?" Noone answered but that may simply be because noone has tried that direction. The reason that I, and now my friend, would do this is that Windows is not our primary OS. We both prefer eCS (aka OS/2) as our primary with windows used only for a few apps where there aren't equivalent or better apps available for eCS. In my case the primary one is Garmin's MapSource used in conjunction with my GPS. I have been using W2000 now for this purpose (and a couple other things occasionally) now for over a year and am comfortable helping my friend with W2K rather than XP. I guess I'm taking a "don't fix it if it ain't broke" attitude.

Sure. Provided he's starting with a clean slate (blank HD) just install the OS as normal and then run the Software Installer.

W2K doesn't "recognize" XP and should just install over it. But it's always better to start fresh, so FDISK and FORMAT the HD in FAT32.

Funny you should mention Garmin Mapsource, as my primary use for the laptop is Garmin Mapsource products. Not the only use, but the primary. Garmin Mapsource functions perfectly with win 2000.

Hey James, why do you suggest FAT32 instead of NTFS

The W2K installer and disk utilties sometimes don't play nice with an NTFS HD.

In addition to James comment, eCS-OS/2 has excellent drivers for reading and writing from/to FAT32. It can (presently) read but not write NTFS. Thus I use FAT32 for ant partition that I wish to access from both eCS and Windows.
