Maybe your laptop takes too long to go to stand by so you get anxious, open the lid and after a while it suspends.

Here's a tip (mostly diagnostic): Go to Power Options Properties > Beeps/Alarms and enable "Lid close action beep". That way, when you close the lid, your laptop will beep until it goes to stand by.

I'll try that

but I don't think I'm to anxious because the lid was closed for 1/2 hour

Then it is quite possible (99%) that there is an active process (you use Windows right? :P ) that prevents the system from suspending.

Try starting windows with all Startup items disabled (msconfig) and attempting to go into standby.

For example if I am running vmware and try to standby, it won't let me as long as I have a guest operating system running. I first have to suspend vmware and then close the lid.

Start > Run > msconfig

In General, select "Diagnostic Startup" and reboot.

Alternatively go to Startup (in msconfig) and click on the Disable All button.
