R40e random slow down when typing
Hi All,
I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem with the R40e, I've had my system since 2003, and I was really happy with it until all of a sudden, my thinkpad has started to slow down but only when I type, it will pause for 3 seconds before displaying the text then all of a sudden speed back up again like normal.
I was wondering if somthing has deicded to die inside my thinkpad, or if it was a configuration error, it has been doing it since xmas, and it's getting annoying now.
I thought it might be because I have too much stuff installed, but the hard drives got 10 gig free. I have also upgraded my laptop a well, it's got a Gig of ram and a QSI-DVD-RW.
I dont know if this would have anything to do with it, but the random slow down started long before I upgraded the system a few weeks ago.
Many thanks for your time,
Warren

It sounds like spyware/virus to me. This exact thing was happening on the T30 that my nephew was using. I ended up reformatting it because I didn't feel like chasing everything down. I am sure that if you used the standard search and removal techniques for getting rid of it, you could do so without reformatting. I was just working under a short deadline, because he was in the midst of exams.
Well I have checked it all out, and the IBM site is useless and all my drivers are up to date. It's so weird, I really don't want to do a re-install though because I only did one a few months back.
I just have no idea what is causing it, but one thing I do know is that it is really annoying.
Anyways back to battling with the Thinkpad from hell hehe

It might be helpful to have Task Manager running, sorted by CPU and minimized to the systray so you can quickly check it when this happens. Sometimes, but not always, you can check the running processes and see which is take up the CPU cycles during this brief time. For such a delay I would expect at least one process (other than System Idle processes) to take up a high percent of the CPU cycles.
Other things to consider are any new applications, including updates to any programs you might have installed recently.

Hi KrazyKritter
I have done as you have suggested but sadly to no avail, nothing seems to change and the processor seems to stay at exactly the same speed at all times for some bizzare reason.
I'm going to crack it open and check out the keyboard connections etc... because I have a funny feeling it's not a software issue but a hardware one.
Thanks for the advice though, looks like this is going to be one of those problems which takes years to solve.
Will keep you guys informed though

Hi SeanM,
I an running the latest version of the keyboard customiser from the lenovo system update software installer, it seems to have cured the problem with the lagging keyboard, but now I have another wonderful problem.
Now my sound crackles and seems to struggle to keep up, Im thinking of rolling back the drivers for the sound card to the older version.
Do you think it could have anything to do with the soundcard and that's why my keyboard has been lagging, I have changed the IRQ assignments to see if that would help thinking it might be because the sound card does not like sharing resources but not no avail.
I'll roll back the sound card drivers now and let you know how it goes.
Thanks for the advice as it seems to have solved it,
Warren

The sound card saga continues,
Well I have installed the latest audio pack for my thinkpad and it's made not a blind bit of difference, I have checked the IRQ's and there are no conflicts what so ever so I am now at a loss, I can now type fine but can't use my laptop for any audio which is annoying considering I wash movies on it and listen to MP3's.
I have tried rolling back the driver to the eairlier revision and to no avail, I have also tried looking for the Microsoft driver and cannot get it to appear in the list.
So if anyone could give me any advice I'd me really appreciative,
Warren

Well looks like I might have found the source, last night my laptop suddenly started getting really hot and switching off all of the time, so it looks like, my CPU fan is fried and it might be causing the laptop to overheat, which could be causing the other problems as well.
I'm currently bidding on one from the USA on ebay, so hopfully if I replace the fan and heatskin my problems should go away.
I was wondering if anyone has actually changed there heatsink and fan in there thinkpad before and if I need to buy a tube of heat conductive paste or if it comes with a little pad already on the heatsink.
Anyways, once the fan arrives I'll let you know how I get on and tell you guys if it solves my problem.
I think the reason it has suddenly shown up now is that with it being summer time and the average temp in England where I live hitting 29C which is unusually high it's finally shown up and the fan has started making a cluncking noise so I think the bairings are on there way out.
Will keep you posted to my solution

Well guys,
The new fan has arrived and has been installed into my thinkpad and all seems well, slow down with the keyboard has stopped and it no longer randomly powers off, however, I do have one concern, the new fan is making a slight clicking noise every now and again, I got so used to the sound of the buggered fan I was wondering if this is meant to occur or not.
Please advise, also OMG you dont want to see the state of the heatsink that came of my thinkpad, instead of it being silver it's a nice charcoal black colour which is not a good sign, also there was a big blob of heat conduit that had turned into the shape of the blob from a square, I will post a link later on to show you guys what the hell happened to it.
