T22 2647-5CU "Overcharged Capacitors"

#1 Post by sucram1161 » Thu May 25, 2006 7:06 pm

Hi New Thinkpad ower of a T22 2647-5CU Great Laptop when it works!!!! but has issues similar to what I am seeing described here as overcharged capacitors with the battery in esp when ever i try to start it batter or mains light flashes and HD access light flashes but nothing have done the fixes that have been suggested removing power push power button multiple times holding power down for 90 secs or longer. sometimes they work sometimes they don't. Sometimes it will start in 2 hours others it takes 2 weeks sitting or longer before it will boot. despite all attempts. seems to boot when it FEELS LIKE IT!!!!! ANY SUGGESTIONS???? am getting despirate love the hi res screen and the funtionality and light weight but need it to be more reliable.

Also from what I've been reading not just any mobo off ebay will be able to fix this because of the high res sxga video.

Thanks Much

Mark

Replace the CMOS battery.

Report back for more suggestions if that fails to cure the problems.

Completely depopulate the machine, e.g. remove HD, optical drive, memory, etc., etc.

Open her up and reseat the CPU.

Clean the fan while it's open.

Renew the thermal paste when reinstalling the fan.

Reinstall keyboard, ONE memory stick, NO HD, and startup.

Report back.

#5 Post by sucram1161 » Sun May 28, 2006 9:10 pm

depopulated the machine. no change in the boots problems didn't reboot unti it was good and ready. ran it for 2 days shut it off. and now it won't boot again. CPU is tight and has a fresh coating of artic silver II. Fan is clean. MB and connection seem tight in the case. Must be overlooking something....

Thanks in advance

Check the voltage on the CMOS battery.

Check the connecter for the CMOS battery on the MB.

could this be a low power AC power adapter issue???

#7 Post by sucram1161 » Fri Jun 02, 2006 8:16 am

Been looking at all of these over charged capacitors posts and looking at the other posts regarding 45W vs 72W power supplies.. Could these issues be related??? because some of the symptoms seem very similar. Any thoughts or ideas??? How about the people having these issues chime in on what wattage power supply they are using???

Just a SWAG!!!

starts sometimes

#9 Post by madmaven » Sun Jul 02, 2006 10:37 pm

I had 2 IBm T23's and both had low power issues and only started infrequently if at all. I sent them back to the seller and he reaired them (for a charge) They apparently Re-soldered a part on the motherboard that is responsible for supplyig power to the board when the machine is powered on. ( ( Is this the job of the capacitors? ) In both cases the machines are working perfectly. So perhaps you should should check the connections on soldered parts that supply voltage.

I'm estimating that there's perhaps 50-100 soldered connections for the just the main power supply circuit. Any chance you can ask your repair service exactly which component(s) was(were) re-soldered? I know that they probably won't tell you but you never know... If they have some knowledge about what the weak point in the design is, then there's hope that it's been published somewhere.

You know, there were a few posts here awhile back that about similar problems; inductors and whatnot, but I suppose you would already know about such issues. ;) :)
