Going on my 4th t40 motherboard should I give it up?

#1 Post by WizardNYC » Thu May 25, 2006 10:17 pm

Well last tuesday they change my motherboard again that was my 3rd motherboard so far in less then a month. Now I was thinking since it was the same tech that change both motherboard maybe he is what's wrong, maybe he is what's messing up the motherboard installation or something, At list that what I hope :)

Anyways, this time the comp I think just fried up, nothing works it doesnt even turn on. Now they say to send it to them for them to fix it.

God man I really wish is the tech fault cause its a real nice laptop. but I am at the point that I just going to sell it on ebay

Maybe the problem is one of the components that plug into the system board. 4 seems crazy. Could something like a bad WiFi card be killing them? A bad battery? A bad AC charger?

I think when they replace the same part more than 3 times, that your entire machine may qualify for replacement. You might ask about that.

tselling I ask for replacement, they say I dont qualify yet :) but I think the point underclocker made about it might be a component part other then the md makes a lot of sence, I hope the repair shop looks more into that :)

Please define "they"! IBM/Lenovo or the repair shop?

Three MB replacements has definitely qualified in the past for a replacement system, usually an upgrade.

Yep! I would get a hold of someone at IBM and get a new machine!

Even Dell has a policy that 3 repairs for the same part within a certain time frame (I think it is 90 days) and they will send you a NEW machine..........

And I know that IBM has it as well.

Well I first I went to the ibm site and did a Service request, when they came and change the mb and the last problem happen then I call 1-800-IBM-SERV I really don't know if it's ibm or lenovo, then I talk to the tech guys and they kept on sending me up the latter and no one could solve the problem, then they say say someone was going to call me, then someone call me and say they will lookup the laptop history, then I was call back again and i was told that I did not qualify yet for the laptop change :) thas the story so far :)

One thing about this I personally belive that the laptop should be replace I even told them give even an old one I really don't care as long as it works :), but I dint want to make a fuzz about it since I baught the laptop on ebay and I really don't know how warranty works with that. So I accepted their offer to be send to the repair shop, But all honesty I really don't have any more confident on this laptop and I most likely will sell it back on ebay.

Man I always wanted a IBM thinkpad. I even sold my dell 700m to get this one and I never had a problem with the dell 700m, I just always wanted a thinkpad. I always thought they were the best laptop on the market and I read up on the T40 review before I baught it and all reviews where great so I baught because of that and because of the warranty which ends May-2007 so I though I could not go wrong. Boy was I wrong ( lol sorry I needed to let that out :) )

hey! and i thought i had it bad! im going on my third motherboard this month, its a t41 however. They are sending me a box, so i can send it to them... Oh and yah, i also got my machine off ebay... and I dont think that changes anything with warranty.

If it fails again, I will ask for a replacement. And whats this I hear about an upgrade?!?! lol, then id ask for a T43p lol...

But yes, thank god its summer, and that i didnt sell my desktop... otherwise, i would be so screwed with school -at least. This experience changes how i do things, start backing schedules and stuff. But, I would have never expected something like this to happen... Id like to think i take great care of all my equipment. END RANT. (also needed that).

Maybe refer your case to an upper level tech? Did you ask for it? :?

They replaced mine and the work performed was excelent.

cmarti I think I went all the way to the top, They send me up like 3 times. And the last person I spoke to he call me and sounded more like a case worker then a tech :). I was about the point that I would had ask for a replacement no matter what they say, but like I say it baught on ebay and I dint want to make a fuzz bout it.

The box should arrive the next business day after you call. If you didn't get it, I would call them back. You should also keep track of all the case numbers you get. Then you can quote all the case numbers back to them and probably get them to replace your machine.

yah my box arrived yesterday. It had alot of cushioning for the laptop. But ya... ive started this ibm thinkpad warranty box collection out of this lol i have so much nicely padded boxes lol they are perfect if i ever want to start selling laptops off ebay haha...

I think you should fuss about it! ebay or not... you bought it. You own it, and you also rightly own the ibm warranty services!

It didnt take too long last time. Im in Canada by the way, and i live in the northwest edge of that country, and the place i sent it too is far away like a place called Toronto, Ontario. So it takes like 2 days to actually get to the destination for me... Last time, the time it took after i sent the box away was about 4-5 days.

If you sell it on ebay and don't disclose the history of problems, then all you are doing is passing on your problem to another person without warning them. Considering that both you and I have bought T40's on ebay - how could you justify that ?

If you do describe the problems in the ebay auction - why would anyone buy it ?

The warranty is still in effect - regardless of where you bought it.

The way you say "I bought on ebay" sounds like you think that is equivalent to buying it in a dark alley from a pimp who just got out of jail.

im on my 4th board as well, with a t40. i asked last time i sent it in if they would replace it, and they told me the system is 3 years old and they won't replace a computer thats that old!! i know that sounds like bs but what should i have said to them? anyways they said they will offer me to have an engineer look at the system after the depot replaces the mb and make sure everything works before i get it back. well i came home today and had it back for its 4th time. and the video is all garbled!! so i just called and told them i want on site repair. they said they would call me back tomorrow morning and let me know if they can do that or not. but i would really like to get a replacement laptop, and i dont want to be told that its too old to be replaced, because its still under their warranty! has anyone had any luck getting their system replaced? if so what did you say to get them to replace it? thanks.

Age has nothing to do with it!! If you get a hold of IBM and not Solectron, YOU have to escalate the call to a supervisor; he reviews the information and then the replacement goes into effect.

again.... YOU must initiate the process! Make sure you get it escalated to the Team leader, he has the power to initiate it.

Good luck!

One more thing...IF the telephone prompt said something like "you are being transfered to IBM remote support in Atlanta Georgia" then you are heading in the right direction; if you do not hear that then you are talking to Solectron.

Nice to know that I'm getting routed to IBM and not the dreaded Solectron, does that depend on the machine code of the laptop?

An option you guys have while still under warranty is to purchase an on-site warranty upgrade, for the standard 3 year warranties it comes out to about $100. You can buy it anytime while under warranty and it lasts til the end of the warranty period. With an on-site tech, you have more assurance that they won't leave without your laptop working. You'll have to look up the right product code for the upgrade from lenovo's website, for a discounted place vendor to buy it from try costcentral.com.

im pretty sure i was talking to ibm and not solectron. i called 1800-426-7378, then told them i wanted a replacement and they connected me to the "mobile escalation line". i was on hold for about 45 min and finally i spoke to a supervisor im assuming. he told me "we do not replace computers we fix them". i have the ezserv warranty, not the on site warranty, but he said i could have an on site technician come and fix my machine. i really want a newer machine but it seems like they wont let me get one. i went ahead and scheduled the on site repair, which is supposed to happen today, so we'll see how that goes. but incase the board they put in today is faulty as well, i would definitely want a replacement machine. should i have asked the supervisor to be escalated to someone else? i really do not know what to tell those guys as it seems they are very keen on fixing machines, not replacing them. should i ask them to send me a t43 and that im fed up or is that asking too much?
