CDRW to DVD CDRW in T23?

I purchased a refurbed T-23 from IBM in January; within a few weeks, the CDRW drive packed it in, they sent me another (used) item. Now it has gone again and I think I should spring for a new drive.

I am currently in China and wonder if I could put in any generic CDRW/DVD drive into this, taking off the mounting hardware from the existing model (SONY CRX700E).?

Yes, you can use any 12.7mm tall notebook drive with the exisiting mounting hardware. You can even put in a dvd burner like the NEC-ND6750A:

You may need to cut a notch in the lower right corner of the face plate for it to fit. I've used a NEC-ND6500 in a T23 with no problems.
