Which WiFi, DVD, and dock (last questions before purchase)

#1 Post by torlanglo » Fri May 26, 2006 11:38 am

I'm about to purchase my next Thinkpad (have a T41 already), and I am settling down on the 200783U model.

I'm a software developer and have decided to "max out" the laptop while keeping size and weight down (I frequently travel to Europe). I'm going to use this as my main machine for web and client software application development (including some 3D graphics software using MS Vista and Windows Presentation Foundation).

I have a few questions, and would very much appreciate some input:

1. This model comes with Intel 3945ABG WiFi. I have read some of the reports on this forum about possible issues with it, such as problems "talking" to LinkSys access points, and general "touchyness". Have these issues been fixed by now? Does anyone recommend getting the 200786U model instead which comes with "ThinkPad 11a/b/g Wi-Fi Wireless II" (is this WiFi model 40Y7026?)?

2. I'm pretty sure the included DVD drive ("4X Max DVD Recordable ATAPI Ultrabay Slim drive") is the same as the optional "ThinkPad Super Multi-Burner Ultrabay Slim Drive - Flat Bezel". Is this correct?

3. I would like to attach 1 or 2 Dell 20" LCD monitors to a dock using 1680 x 1050 resolution and max color depth. Will the Advanced Mini Dock handle this? If not, which one will?

I hoping to make my order today (or this weekend).

Thanks for any input,
Tor.

I had the same question #1...after reading all the threads about possible problems, I decided to take it safe and get the Thinkpad wireless card. I connect to a couple different Linksys routers and I have had ZERO problem connecting. My $.02

RE #1: I took my chances with the Intel 3945 (because I could get the laptop cheaper) and haven't really had a problem with it. Only using it with my old Billion 743GE (802.11b). There was an issue with static IP addressing, but I think this was because of Access Connections software, not the card. Otherwise, the reception and speeds are great -- been playing Counter-Strike:Source over wireless with no dropouts or connectivity issues. YMMV

1) The Atheros/Thinkpad card is better. If you have a choice go for that one over the Intel.

2) not sure

3) If you want to do dual heads, you'll need the advanced dock and a PCI-E graphics card with dual outputs.

foodle,

What makes you think the Atheros/Thinkpad card is better?

I'm a bit hesitant to pick that card because it seems to make more sense to get the Intel card which has been made to work with this chipset (a "bundle" kind of a thing).
