R40 heat issues (still)

ive posted about this, and will continue to until something changes.

my R40 has been running CPU mostly at 50-60, sometimes even when idle (closer to 50). it will run down to the 40s from time to time.

the HDD is constantly in the 50's and around 60, and i read that is too hot for a hard drive to run.

im getting really nervous here, and just want to see if its going to hurt it running that hot. i dont mind the high temps if i know its not killing the laptop.

also, i looked into notebook hardware control, and that wont let me change my voltage, which i wanted to try. its changing the CPU speed, but that doesnt seem to make much of a difference.

You could always try to open the R40 up and clean the CPU and put on some fresh Arctic Silver 5. That should bring the temp down a bit.

Otherwise, the temps that you have aren't too high. My T21 is sitting here at 58 degrees, while I am typing this message. it is the upper 70s and 80s that you need to really worry.

id like to open this thing up, but i have a feeling it wont be fitting back together lol.

does anyone know if a local pc shop would do a job like this (from personal experience)

i dont want to rip it apart myself, but i also dont want it to cost as much as the laptop to have it done.

I use speedswitchXP to control the speed of the CPU.
Even on AC you can take an option not to have full speed and the cpu speed is dependent then from the activity demanded.
f.e. I coosed battery mode and my 1.4Ghz cpu runs now at 598 Mhz.

Pentium 4's run hot... there is no way around that.

The temps you are seeing are pretty normal for a mobile p4.

I am responding to this thread instead of the new one about your hard drive heat, because i wanted to clarify my earlier response...when I said that your temps were fine, I was referring to your CPU temps...I must have overlooked the comment on the hard drive. I would have warned you that those HDD temps are a little high. What are the specs of your hard drive? (ie. brand, speed and model number)

The HDD heat might be why your R40 feels so warm, thus making you worried about the temps of your CPU.

i could tell you were talking about the cpu temps and not the hd. the only info i can get is this:

HITACHI_DK23EA-40B [Hard drive] (37.10 GB) -- drive 0, s/n 7C6399, rev 00K3A0B6, SMART Status: Healthy

i believe its a 5400rpm. i did a system restore to correct the startup problem, and as i type the hdd temp is 54C. it was up to 69C earlier, but maybe the fact that it was in the upper 80s in the room i was in. i concluded that the ram was causing this to heat up- but i have the same ram in now as earlier, and its running fine.

down to 53C now...i took the keyboard off to take a peak, and everything looked clean. i was expecting piles of dust but no!
