T20 Boot Problem Again ARGH!!!!

#1 Post by verktyg » Sat May 27, 2006 12:18 pm

Bought a plain vanilla T20 PIII 650 with the 13.3" screen new in 2000. Carried it all over the US for 4 1/2 years, worked great (after adding RAM & 7200RPM HDD). Used lightly, mainly for Email, map program and Power Point presentations.

In mid 2004 about a month after I read about the T2x non boot problem it happened to my T20. Did about a lot of checking around and ended up replacing it with a new X31.

Last year I replaced the T20 mainboard with a new sealed in box unit that I picked up for $75.00. It was a later model board than the original. T20 worked great again except that both of my batteries died at about the same time. Replaced them with a new IBM battery and all was well again.

It was still a little sluggish so I upgraded the CPU and fan to a PIII 850 and added another 256MB of memory. It was running great and I turned it into a dual boot Win98SE-XP system.

Last week the @$#%$%* thing died again!!! This problem is endemic of the T20, T21 & T22 TPs. IBM seems to have corrected the problem with the T23 and later TPs.

One could argue that I got 4 years of use out of my T20 but that's not the point, I have a 755Cx that I bought new in 1995 and it still works as well as it did when it was new!

If it were any other company than IBM they could possibly be accused of engineered time delimited mainboard failure because there have been so many problems with the mainboards on this family of TPs.

I'm going to list this for sale with all of the accessories, any offers?
