Recommend a wireless network 16-bit PCMCIA card for 760XD?

#1 Post by David Kries » Sat May 27, 2006 4:28 pm

Can anyone recommend a wireless network 16-bit PCMCIA card for the ThinkPad 760XD?

I tried a couple 32-bit cardbus wireless network connectors before I realized I needed a 16-bit PCMCIA card. I almost got one installed but had difficulties with IRQ steering. I've installed all the BIOS updates and Windows 98 SE service packs since then, so the ThinkPad should be good to go now.

Can anyone recommend a good wireless card, and a place to buy one?

Thanks so much for your expert opinions. This is an identical post to one I added to the Legacy Hardware section; sorry if this is redundant.

http://www.compusa.com/products/product ... pfp=BROWSE

This says it's 32 bit, but I bought two for a relative a couple months ago and they were 16 bit. Dlink may have revised them and Compusa may have had old stock. But I would buy in store just in case you have to return it.

Also, the Microsoft MN-520 is 16 bit and easy to set up. I got one cheap on eBay for my 760CD.

I have a 2 year old Cisco Aironet 350 PC Card (802.11b), which I consider a Rolls Royce. Better reception and functionality than I've seen for some a/b/g cards, and the Cisco software for it is superb. Does up to WPA-PSK TKIP for encyption (unfortunately AES support is hardware based on the Ciscos and the 350 line was superceded by the CB21AG).

You can find them from time to time on ebaY, search for "Aironet 350" or "AIR-PCM352." If you can't find one, I'll sell you mine (like new condition; box, discs, manuals and all) for going rate, it's got the latest firmware and you can FTP the latest software and docs for it from my site. Just PM me.

[edit]
Oh here's a screen shot of the main utility. I may have a shot of the "site survey utility," too, which is way cool for finding available networks in public places (wardriving).

3rd on the orinoco. Only problem might be that the older ones don't support WPA. Best cards I've ever used otherwise though.
