Windows Vista beta on T42p

#1 Post by csv96 » Sun May 28, 2006 8:11 am

I understand that the recovery partition is hidden from Windows XP and can't be easily deleted without using 3rd party software. What about Vista? If I do a clean install (i.e. boot with Vista CD, delete the main partition, and create a fresh NTFS partition) of Windows Vista beta 2, will I later be able to restore Windows XP using the recovery partition?

Short answer: No. From what I have read on this forum, those that install a fresh copy of Windows end up messing up the MBR for the Recovery Partition. There is a floppy disk program available that is supposed to fix the MBR so the recovery partition can boot again.

That said, "I think" you could boot up using a Rescue Media CD and restore Windows XP from the recovery partition, but I am not absolutely certain this would work. (don't confuse Rescue Media with Recovery Media)

You should have no problem using the Product Recovery Disc set to restore your factory software. Warning: using these discs erases all existing data on your hard drive. You can burn a set of these yourself. Go to either Start > All Programs > Access IBM > Create Recovery Discs OR Start > All Programs > ThinkVantage > Create Recovery Media. Once you launch that, you will see the option to create the Rescue Media and the Product Recovery Discs.

Thanks for the info. I guess laptop hard drives are cheap enough that I'll just buy a second drive to play around with Vista so I won't risk messing up the original drive's recovery partition.

i am sure you can restore XP as long as you didn't delete the hidden partition.
installing windows vista would not delete it.

you gotta burn it on a dvd first, then put it in before you restart your computer. read the license and enter the cd-key.......etc....it's very simple........nothing to worry about....

You can install Vista from inside XP, this will give you dual boot and your recovery partition.

My impression was that the website said that the Vista Beta 2 is not currently available.

Windows Vista (beta 2, build 5384) is only available to MSDN subcribers or MS Beta testers.

There are different types of MSDN subscriptions. Contact your organization to see if they've subscribed to MS Betas.

I guess it is japanesse in the first place. And as far as I can see (don't get me wrong, I do not understand the language) - there is no english version of vista available (only server). So, what the author of the message is trying to say?

And how it is working for you?

Any bumps? Or something that you miss from the old XP?
