xp starts slow, then disappears

i start up my r40, and things go as they should. the welcome sound plays, but just with my black wallpaper in the background. nothing comes up for about 5 minutes after the welcome sound. i can hit ctrl alt del, and out of the 40 processes that usually run, only 20 are running.

ctrl esc doesnt bring up the start menu, i guess it isnt even running somehow. once it finally comes up, everything crawls. then eventually the taskbar goes away again and im back where i started. anyone seen something so ridiculous and annoying?

ive only been up and running for a week and a half on this thing, and arent too keen on doing a restore already.

on another note, the first time i turned it on this evening, i hit the power button and nothing happened. it is working now, but it did that twice, but never on AC. batteries are running it now fine, maybe just a glitch.

Sometimes problems with the wireless or WiFi can cause slow boot ups like you mention. Here are a couple of things to try and see if they make any difference.

Check in Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services, whether the Wireless Zero Configuration service is started. Try setting it to automatic and starting it if it is not.

Try disabling the wireless adapter and reboot. See if that speeds up your boot up time substantially. To disable the wireless adapter, go to Start > Connect To > Show all connections, then right-click on the wireless adapter and choose disable. You can reenable it later the same way.

Finally, if your hard drive is on it's way out, that can cause slow boot ups. Try running a drive testing program.
