C:\preboot - What is it?

#1 Post by atekant » Mon May 29, 2006 2:56 am

Today I found a hidden folder on my boot drive called \preboot!
As I have recently formatted my drive and installed XP from scratch, there is no trace of the IBM Recovery on it anymore.
The date of the folder and the files coincide with when I ran the "new" System Update utility.

So, this is something SU brought in. But I don't know what exactly it is (other than the obvious), and how is it going to get used?
There is a lot of java code in it, and a copy of the Opera browser.

Let's assume it is a recovery folder instead of a recovery partition. I still don't get under what conditions it will be used.

Anybody with an idea?

In your case, System Update probably installed that directory "for you". Search the urls below for preboot to see how it is releated to IBM software.

What really pisses me off is that I have a factory installation on my t43p. But, IBM did NOT provide a rescue partition on my computer, unlike most others on this forum, and instead decided to provide me with "hidden-from-windows-api" directories on the single 80GB NTFS partition.

To top it off, this seems to cripple C:\IBMTOOLS\utils\spi\reccd.exe (which is where the Create Recovery CD's shortcut leads). So I have no way of backing up my system at all, short of loading up [censored] Small linux, buying a BYTECC USB to PATA interface, and "dd"ing the whole [censored] drive to an external segate drive.
