I used a damp cotton cloth last weekend on a 2 year old T41, worked superbly. If it's really *dirty* you might use a thin solution of gentle soap (Ivory, Dr. Bronner's, glycerin) to dampen the cloth.
Not WET, mind you, but DAMP.
I wouldn't worry about the minute scratches and scuffs. My T41 has 'em. It's used, for pete's sake. Used means used. Only weenuses gripe that a used laptop has some light wear and tear on the xterior. Now the display ... for that, use a good light LCD screen cleaning fluid (NOT Windex or other glass cleaners!) and lint-free cloth.
