Problem with latest Fingerprint s/w update (to version 5.5)

#1 Post by Nick Y » Tue May 30, 2006 12:46 pm

Just installed lastest fingerprint s/w update, having checked for updates with s/w installer.

Now I cannot get beyond login; get a fatal error with winlogon.exe followed by blue screen.

Any suggestions?

I can start, in safe mode, but cannot uninstall fingerprint s/w. Tried disabling via BIOS, but to no avail.

I have the same problem. To overcome the problem: do not reply to the error message.
Logon with your userpassword. The system will start slowly but later on it works fine.
Again: do not reply to the error message. Just let it on the screen. Afterwards de-install 5.5 and reinstall 5.4 (older version).

Very disappointing!

Thanks. I did try to leave it, but it still crashed. Have managed to restore to earlier point and am backing up everything! Will then remove 5.5 and go back to 5.4 as you wisely suggest.

You guys try uninstalling 5.4 first?

I haven't upgraded yet, since I saw this... very concerning.

May also be upset because it could require CSS7 (new):

I did not remove 5.4 first as the s/w installer came up with the fingerprint update and then proceeded to install. I did expect it to send me back to uninstall 5.4 first, but it did not.

Although I spotted (later) the CSS update, s/w installer has not flagged that up yet. (I am on V6 of CSS.)

Now that I have backed up everything, perhaps I will have another go, although a quick read of the link you gave suggests a chicken and egg situation; which should to do first...?

I'd suggest fingerprint, then css. Though that's somewhat of a guess.

Uninstall 5.4, restart, install 5.5 and activate the fingerprintsoftware solved the problem. There was no warning to uninstall 5.4 first.

Well after nearly two hours, I have uninstalled 5.4; installed 5.5 and updated CSS.

Not sure what it has done, bar losing the Windows welcome screen (something called tvt_gina.dll apparently stops that); lost the simple three icon shutdown screen, probably via same dll, and lost my use of CSS to log into to several things. Apart from that, all seems OK...

I didn't install the latest CSS to avoid such problems you experience just now. Fingerprint 5.5 works without CSS V 7 for me (I'm on 6).

found a lot about tvt_gina.dll, on http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewforum.php?f=8, causing problems. Seems to be a long standing issue.

I just let Software Installer do it's magic... worked fine.

Updated CSS myself after... also no problem.

I'm relieved... you scared me... guess that's at least somewhat of an isolated incident.

Lucky? Still stuck here with a bit of a mess. Windows login screen lost. Also I get a message for a Windows password security update everytime I boot. Followed IBM/Lenovo info to load update or clear message and neither seem to work as predicted. (To clear message window requires a template in R&R tools. Downloaded the R&R Tools, but no template.)

Seems to me that IBM/Lenovo have dropped s/w installation-configuration checking -probably as part of a cost cutting exercise...

Comment on the Windows forum mentioned Rescue and Recovery 3.1 being required. Just found it on the list of latest updates this morning (1st June), so will try that. Note 3.1 was not on the update list yesterday (31 May) even though it is dated as 30th May.

I also got the error after updating and installing V. 5.5.

After that, I couldn't log into windows using the reader nor a password.

Solution: started up in safemode and used system restore to revert to previous software versions.

Voila! Back in business.

Seems to be the most simple solution to a screwed up s/w update.

Posted most of this to the Thinkpad/Windows forum, but now have CSS 7, Finger print s/w 5.5 and R&R3.1 installed.

a) Latest is that I find that I cannot use the TSS Type-and-Transfer-Tool for passwords on either Firefox or IE. Anyone got this going? I cannot drag passwords using the red cross-hair to the webpage dialog box.

b) Also I get the following message each time I power up:

------
Your system is in danger of potential data loss when changing your Microsoft Windows password. To learn more about an important update that prevents this data loss, see the following Web site:

http://www.lenovo.com/support/site.wss/ ... MIGR-63271
-------

I have tried all suggested means, bar phoning Microsoft, but unable to get rid of it.

c) Finally, for the moment, I seem to have to swipe my fingerprint in twice. Once with the Windows login, which took me ages to recover, and then when the desk top shows, the fingerprint entry picture comes up again.

Think I may have to go back to the earlier versions soon before I find more...

Since my 2nd reboot I'm getting your "B" problem. Haven't found a fix yet... I'll post back if I find anything.

I tried to revert to CSS 6, but even though I had removed 7 -or so I thought -it thought otherwise and would not let me re-install CSS6.

Just have to wait until CSS8 comes out...

Power-on Security function

ThinkPad R60, R60e
ThinkPad T60, T60p
ThinkPad X60, X60s
ThinkPad Z60t, Z61m, Z61e, Z61t
Since I DO use power on fingerprint reading, this is how I spell S-H-O-W-S-T-O-P-P-E-R.

I hope Software Installer doesn't offer this to me. Maybe I'm missing something?

I called Microsoft (1 800 MICROSOFT), mentioned the KB Number (890951), and they emailed me the hotfix (took about 10 minutes since I actually had them do another for me while I was on the line).

Installed, rebooted, no problems.

I been wondering the same thing. I use English windows and software, but got my regional settings set to Norwegian. Seems like the software check you windows regional settings and use the same language for the software. I think it would make more sense to use the same language as the OS.

I changed my regional settings to US before installing, then it installed english, but when I restarted and changed back, fingerprint software also changed. very annoying

Yes. That is the version. You missed the last bit of the 'used on' quote:
<<All integrated fingerprint readers support the Power-on Security function. Refer to BIOS documentation for supported version.

Solution is to clear login problem by removing existing fingerprint s/w prior to installation.

It was s/w installer that offered it -but did not say anything about removing old version first, manually, and did not remove it automatically.

(If you are thinking of going to CSS7 with R&R 3.1, I still have a problem with using the Type-and-Transfer Tool; I cannot drag password to webpage password field.)

It appears that a phone call to Microsoft is the answer.

Annoying that IBM/Lenovo have not got the way to stop the message on their 'ThinkVantage Technologies Administrator Tools' webpage as they say.

Hi, thanks for replying! It's ashame that the software installer or the system update 2 can't help to solve this problem. Guess I will have to email Microsof to have them send me the hotfix.

Thanks, Nick. Sounds like YET ANOTHER update that I won't be bothering with, as my present system works fine.

Pity that IBM doesn't differentiate between systems that need updates and those that done. Six months after getting my T43, I'm being hawked for updates which don't fix anything in my MTM. E.g., the 74 MB (?!?) download for Bluetooth with Enhanced Data Rate software ... probably irrelevant for my Bluetooth/modem CDC.

This is because of licensing... the fix isn't available online via Microsoft.com either. Because it's not released...it's only given when asked for, and you have the problem it fixes. It hasn't been "fully tested". I'm 99.999987% sure it's more Microsoft not willing, than IBM/Lenovo.

Wrt my comment about R&R 3.1 coming and going on the update list, it seems to have gone again (5th June). I noticed this last night and then checked again this morning. I wonder what is going on?
