HD Heat

#1 Post by dsigma6 » Tue May 30, 2006 5:16 pm

i was quite uncomfortable seeing that at idle, my HD temp was hovering around 65C. given the fact that its 32C outside, i thought it might be the reason.

but i removed my 512MB ram, which has a metal plate on each side (to me, it seems like thats why its so hot)...and now im running at 56C and it hasnt gone up.

just sharing my experience on an R40!

HDD temperature around 65 degrees Celsius?

That is well into the warning zone for continued HDD operation.

Are you sure that is your primary HDD?

well in mobmeter it says temperature, and hdd#0.

ive taken temperature to be the cpu, and hdd...to be the hdd!

but right now its at 68C since i just had a dvd playing, but this is scary and very hot. computer is running smooth though...

The highest I have gotten my HDD to is around 47 degrees Celsius, I can't imagine letting it get over 50 degrees and not have NHC or something else start warning me about the temperature. I think the critical temperature cut off is around 75 degrees Celsius (mine is around 31 degrees right now according to MM).... :?

My HDD Hitachi DK23FA-60 (4200rpm) is sitting at 53.

Here is a kewl new program that another user just linked me to, that shows you the health of your hard drive, as well as performance: HDDLife.

EDIT: Forgot to attach the link.

i'll give it a shot. but still, something must be wrong with the hard drive even though it keeps telling me the smart status is healthy.

thank you!

i tried hdd program and i got 100% healthy and 100% performance...as the temp sat at 56C.

its still at 56C and the only thing im doing is typing on here.

i need to find out what other R40 users with the same HD get for temps. i use a coolpad to lift it off the ground, wondering if using one that blows air onto the bottom would make any difference.

It is warm in the house right now (hot outside), and my machine is busy with Outlook (working well and smoothly, but still a pig). CPU is at 43 and HDD#0 is at 35. I rarely see the HD go higher than this. At idle, the HD is usually much closer to 32 or thereabouts. And this is a 7200 rpm hard drive. ... JD Hurst

Hard drive replaced...heat

#10 Post by dsigma6 » Tue Jun 06, 2006 7:18 am

i upgraded my old 40 gb 4200rpm 2mb cache with the same size 5400rpm hitachi 8mb cache E5K100. i thought this would change everything, and i suppose it has. i used the restore discs so the hd was busy for a while, then a ton of updates including SP2. after working on SP2 for a while, this new "cooler" hard drive topped out at 58C. given thats 10C cooler than the old drive would have been under that load, its still way too high.

is there a break-in period? could i be so lucky as to have this actually work out for me lol.

i set up an 8 inch fan behind the laptop while it was lifted on a cool pad, and the cpu dropped from a high of 65C to 40C, and the HD from 58C to 53C under full load. its amazing what a little bit of air will do for the CPU temp! but when im not sitting next to a fan, id like to be comfortable leaving the [censored] thing on for more than 20 minutes.

I know of no break-in periods for HDDs that change the temps that they normally operate at; something is really up, my friend with an R40 doesn't get those kind of temps. :?

Is this on "loading" the HDD or is this at HDD Idle? It makes a big difference. I can't see the HDD reaching high temperatures without doing some long series of I/O operations. Granted that holds, as long as the HDD isn't being "cooked" by some other hot element in the system.

those temps were at full load. the cpu hit 60C often during the install, but would drop down to the low 50s quickly, then back up to a high of 65C.

the last HD hit a high of 70C and i nearly %#$@ myself. im looking into the post warranty for $169 to take care of my old HD and other small issues, maybe there is a mobo problem?

if anyone has more info for this thread, please post, but im looking for this warranty and want info...posted to another thread for the warranty- http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=26003
