What's the best place to buy an extra HDD?

#1 Post by XCoalMiner » Thu Aug 05, 2004 8:11 pm

I thought I saw this posted recently, but couldn't find it via searching:

Where is the best place to buy a second HDD for my tp, ... say 80 Gb or larger?

Zipzoomfly.com or newegg.com, although I prefer the former.

Good luck finding a laptop HD bigger than 80GB :P They don't arrive until this fall (when the "massive" 100 GB Seagate arrives). Personally, I'm holding off getting a new HD until then, since I'm really liking the idea of having a 100 GB 7200 rpm drive.

zipzoomfly gets my vote, too.   if you can wait, hitachi's 7K100 line will also be ready this fall but the price will be a premium.   otherwise, a 60gb E/7K60 or 80gb 5K80 is a great way to go.

Thanks for the recommendations.

I couldn't find an 80 Mb and 7200 rpm on zipzoomfly.com, .... does such a combination exist?

I don't think you can get 80 Gb and 7200 rpm yet.

The availability of 60 Gb and 7200 rpm in a relatively light laptop was the main reason I chose the ThinkPad (versus Dell).

Yes, but they're not yet widely available at the retail level and even if they were they'd be extraordinarily expensive.
If you want speed, get a 7K60, if you need storage capacity, get a 5K80.

http://www.seagate.com/newsinfo/products/notebook/ No idea about pricing, but the Momentus 7200.1 is supposed to arrive this fall.

Word on the street is that the Momentus 7K100 will be introduced at around $450 to $500.

IIRC that's what both the 40GNX and 7K60 were introduced at on their respective rollouts.
