Freeware to save you from repetetive typing

#1 Post by ibmguy » Fri Jun 02, 2006 7:26 am

I just found a nice Freeware called PhraseExpress which allows organising and pasting of frequently used common phrases.

Video at http://www.phraseexpress.com

Very nice, especially if you have a X20/X30/X60 with small keybkoards.

Check it out. Its free!

If you only need typing/replacing phrases to speed up typing, there's also another freeware called "Speed Typing":
www.colorpilot.com/speed-typing.html

There's also AutoHotKey freeware which also can program key sequences to script things (close window, replace typing phrases):

@w0qj: It tried many such programs before and none of them beat Phrase Express:

Speed Typing is just a crippled version of the commercial version "Type Pilot" which still does less than the free PhraseExpress.

Autohotkey is very flexible, but only can do text replacement and is a nightmare to configure. A real nerd/geek type of command line software.

Can you say:

Code: Select all

^!s::
Send Sincerely,{enter}John Smith ; This line sends keystrokes to the active (foremost) window.
return
That was not random typing. This is a simple hotkey association.

The same procedure in Phrase Express? See http://video.phraseexpress.com

Well, a "tiny" bit easier, isn't it? ;-)

"Random typing" :lol:

Phrase Express looks like a nice piece of software. Gonna try it out...

What a nifty piece of software. Just found this topic by accident. Should it not be moved to the X forum as it seems to be most useful for tablet and subnotebooks with smaller keyboards?!
Best regards,

Many editors for programmers have an auto completion function. Like in GNU Emacs, one can press ALT+/ after writing the begining of a word, and it will complete the word to other words that begin with the same letters (and were written in one of the open documents). And then subsequent presses on / while holding the ALT down would toggle through this list of words. This is good especially for long function names, but it doesn't complete phrases, only up to the next space.

Just to let you know. An upgrade of the PhraseExpress is available.

It's still free, so don't wait and get it:

I rarely endorse software but can't express enough, how useful this nifty tool is. Especially on tablets (while I 'only' have a X31 :-))

I downloaded and installed PhraseExpress, then uninstalled it about 30 minutes later. I can see where it might be useful for slow typists or those with less-than-optimal keyboards, but it isn't for me . . . I can type faster than it can come up with alternatives (T60 w/NMB keyboard on the road; Logitech Multimedia keyboard at home). It's faster for me to just go ahead and type the phrase.

It may be useful for longer stretches of boilerplate, but the annoyance factor is pretty high when it's constantly barking word/phrase selections at you.

Just my $.02 . . .

I do not know what you mean with barking suggestions.

It just replaces what you have defined. And if you do not like the given presets, you can easily delete them and only use text abbreviations which you have defined for yourself.

PhraseExpress can certainly fire up e.g. 'Lenovo Thinkpad X31' by just typing 'x31' than you would be able to type. It really depends how smart you are to define suitable text replacment abbreviations.

By the way, for abbreviations, I only enter 'abbr' and for 'by the way' I need to type just 'btw'.

Can you beat this? ;-)

It's apparently a feature of its AutoCorrect functionality; it pops up little drop-down menus as you type . . . very annoying. I know it can be turned off, but I couldn't figure out why anyone would want it turned on in the first place unless they typed with their elbows.
