1600 on DVI through dock------->automatic to 1400 undocke

#1 Post by neuromed » Sat Jun 03, 2006 1:26 am

I just wanted to know if the new T60's would display 1600 resolution through the DVI? Do they even have DVI, or is it just through the docking station? Also, will the resolution when docked and connected to a monitor (1600 in this case) revert back to my laptop's native screen resolutions (1400 in my case) when undocked automatically? I would hate to have to continuously change the display settings as i am doing with my T42.

If you have any advice on how to do this automatically on a T42, please share. If this has been posted elsewhere, i could not find it. THank you.

The T60, unfortunately, does not have a DVI port. You have to get the "Advanced" Dock to get it, I think.

I think I have read that all T60s (even GMA950 graphics) support up to 1920x1200 (WUXGA) resolution externally.

I have just an IBM port replicator for my T42, and even it has a DVI, so i am sure the basic dock for the T60 will have a DVI. I think i checked and it said it did.

My question is not about support, as I do know they support different resolutions. I think its clear that I recognized that fact in my post, but perhaps I was not being explicit enough.

What I am asking is: is there a way to hot undock my computer and have it AUTOMATICALLY change between the external monitor's resolution and the laptop's own display's resolution? And vice versa?

One important note: for some reason (i can't think of) they changed the configs of the port replicator when they introduced the"advanced" mini dock. I hate the mini dock because you have to "undock" it with a soft button and if you have wireless turned on it takes an additional 30 sec to go to sleep mode.
Also the port rep does NOT have the DVI connector, or sound or mic ports, also diff than prev port reps it only has 1 ps2 connector and has no serial or parallel either. it does add 3 usb ports from previous models. That said you MUST get the advanced mini if u want to DVI and yes you can setup presentation director and it will auto switch your screens. I have the 2007 model and have an external 24" dell 1920x1200 monitor. It works well. Hope this helps :D

The Advanced Mini-dock has DVI. Not near it at the moment, but I recall that when I undock (from extended desktop across laptop screen and external monitor, running native on laptop at 1400x1050 and native on monitor at 1280x1024), the resolution on the laptop doesn't look quite right, and I use FN+F7 to switch to native resolution. Annoying, but a relatively minor annoyance IMHO.

on my T42, when i set the computer, using Presentation director, to display 1900 when docked and 1078 when undocked, it does not switch automatically. Which means, i have to open presentation director to switch it. Am I doing something wrong?

For the T60, will this be the same ? It seems to a minor software issue that really gets annoying, since the whole idea of docking is that it is fast and easy.

BTW, johnp126, I have no idea what you mean by soft button or what ever else you were saying about the wireless.

Here's what happens when I use the mini-dock:

1. When the machine is on, and subsequently docked, it auto-switches to extended desktop (which is my default docked selection). The switching causes the screens to flash a bit, but it gets there eventually.

2. When I undock the machine while it is on, it attempts to revert to the usual laptop-only scheme, but the resolution isn't quite right - text looks blurry. I have to hit F7 to re-select laptop-only scheme and then it gets to the correct (native) resolution.
