T30 HD upgrade problems

#1 Post by BikerMike » Sat Jun 03, 2006 1:34 am

I bought a 7K60 to replace my 40GB/4800RPM stock drive and have been trying desperately and unsuccessfully to clone my old drive onto my new one. I have tried both Norton Ghost 2003 and Acronis True Image 9; by putting both drives onto one ATA cable in my W2K desktop and cloning directly. Every time I get a result that looks fine to the sort of casual inspection I can perform with Windows Explorer. The cloning software reports success. But the drive won't boot.
Just a blinking cursor. There doesn't seem to be anything I can set in BIOS to tell it what type of drive to expect. I can't think of any reason this shouldn't work - unless somehow the cloning software is looking to the operating system for information about making the drive bootable (the drive I'm cloning is XP Pro). Can anyone suggest anything helpful? Bearing in mind that I don't have a restore disk?

Read this thread:

If you remove the TP disk from the machine, connect it to a desktop and clone to a new disk for the TP, the cloning process may fail because the desktop reads the notebook drive geometry differently than the TP does
