Significant eBAY security breach??

#1 Post by leoblob » Sat Jun 03, 2006 1:56 pm

I belong to another message board for Camaro and Firebird enthusiasts. Today, I saw the following thread discussing what sounds like a significant security problem on eBAY: http://www.ws6zxr.com/showthread.php?t=32620

I don't know enough to determine if it's really true, but if it is, I felt people should be aware of it.

E-Bay security breach, Norton AV security breach, Royal Navy security breach, US Veterans Dept. security breach, Well Fargo security breach.

Life's a breach :!: :x

If true, let's hope E-Bay gets this under control quickly. I believe they will.

I have lost track of how many times E&Y have lost laptops

Looks like they could use some CSS, a few BIOS passwords, and a fingerprint reader or two. :)

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.

The problem I have personally (as a sometimes Hotels.com user) is not that E&Y lost another lappy (love to have the contract to supply them with Thinkpads), but that Hotels.com had credit card numbers to give to E&Y in the first place.

Visa, MC, and Amex all have specific rules prohibiting merchants from retaining credit card numbers. But it seems that no one is honoring those rules, and the cards are not enforcing them.

Hotels.com deserves to have their hand slapped hard. I'd love to see the cards suspend their right to process transactions until a full audit and investigation take place, systemic deficiencies are identified, and corrective action is put in place and verified. I'd say 6-8 months of no credit card activity would be about right.

Personally, I am now a former Hotels.com customer.
