I have a Thinkpad 600X. Will your drive work?

Thanks.

Yes, it will work in the 600X, as long as the BIOS is up to date. You might have to monitor your temps, because some 5400 and 7200rpm drives have a tendancy to create a little more heat than the system is used to.

Yes it will.

If you are running a very old BIOS, you might need to do a quick flash before you install the drive (someone double check me on this - it's been about a year since I had a 600X in hand to play with).

Thank you for the quick replies!

My BIOS is ITET48WW, 11/30/99.
The Thinkpad model is 2645-4EU.

I wasn't able to upgrade BIOS because I don't have a battery. I tried the suggestion I found in the forum (BIOS update w/o battery) and it didn't work.

----

I don't know if I should buy a newer model or just upgrade my existing 600X. It's a P3 500 and I have 320MB RAM (I think it is max). XP runs a little slow. So, I'm running W2K now. It's ok.

Mainly I plan to use it for presentation to clients. I might also run a webserver (Apache with PHP) and install websites so I can sell my web development service to clients. Therefore, the faster the better during demo process. I don't know how much speedup I can expect with 7200RPM drive? Buying a new laptop would only be a last resort because I have tight budget. On the other hand, a nice wide screen would probably impress clients more  .

I'm installing a utility to monitor the system temperature and see what it is right now. I'll see how it is.

----
If I'm buying, do you take PayPal?

Thanks!

The relative speed increase is going to depend on what kind of drive you are going from.

2000 is significantly faster on anything running less than 512MB of RAM, that is a good call on your part.

I do take paypal (no credit or debit cards however, due to fees).

My current drive is the stock OEM. 4200RPM, I believe.

Another thing that gets me annoyed is the normal scratching sound of the hard drive everytime I do something useful. It is quite loud.

I think my PayPal is hooked up to my checking account. So, that should be ok.

The max ram for your 600X is 576mb (256mb x 2, plus 64mb onboard)

Your BIOS is version 1.03, and the most recent is 1.11. You might be ok with the hard drive, but Win2K has a fix with 1.06, which is the a couple BIOS updates from the verison that you have:

(Fix) Microsoft Windows 2000: System rarely hangs with connection/disconnection of AC adapter.
By the way, as if the Fair trader feedback thread isn't enough, I highly recommend brent. Two thumbs up!!

The older drives are VERY loud.

All of the newer drives use fluid dynamic bearings and are much quieter. Granted, a 7200RPM drive is going to be the loudest of all current drives, but it should still be quieter than that drive you have now.

EDIT - off to bed. I'll respond to any questions in the morning. :D
