swapping from T43 to T42

#1 Post by Rose » Sun Jun 04, 2006 3:22 pm

I want to swap a factory installed disk on a T43 to a T42. It hangs upon boot and its probably some chipset driver causing it to hang.

So how do I work around this problem? What driver do I remove? Anyone knows?

Do you have rescue and recovery discs for the T42?

You could try booting into safe mode.
2668-75U T43, 2GB RAM, 2nd hand NMB kybd, Dock II, spare Mini-Dock, and spare Port Replicators. Wacom BT tablet. Ultrabay 2nd HDD.
2672-KBU X32, 1.5GB RAM, 7200 rpm TravelStar HDD.

Booting in safe mode does not work. It hangs just as it does under normal startup.

No I dont have r&r disks for the T42. I dont even have the original disk since the former owner kept it when he parted from the machine.

I think the "brute force" solution would be to order the R&R disc set so that you can restore the drive in the T42 to the factory default image. Without knowing what errors you're encountering, it's anyone's guess. I presume you have reviewed the EVENTVWR and found nothing.

If you don't have the full caddy for the hard drive, it may not be plugged in properly.

I recently got a second hard drive, not from IBM/Lenovo. It did not come with any caddy. I put the drive in the Ultrabay Slim hard disk drive adapter and cloned it. When I put the drive in the main drive slot to test it, it did not boot. Later I got it working. I believe I did not have the connector lined up properly when I plugged it in the first time. I noticed that without the cage around the new drive, it is possible to not have it plugged in properly. With the cage installed, there is no problem, because the cage takes up the extra space in the slot. Also, when I compared the new drive without the cage to the existing drive with the cage, I came to realize that the new drive is installed in what appears to be an upside down position. With the cage over the drive, you don't really notice this. So the drive is installed with the circuit board facing up, and metal cover and label facing down.
