X20 - 256 MB RAM stick, total memory only showing as 192 MB

#1 Post by testpie » Mon Jun 05, 2006 2:53 pm

I've just bought a PC100, non-parity, 256 MB SODIMM module for my IBM X20 and installed it, and all seemed fine. However, whenever i go on my system specs (via right-clicking "My Computer"), it states that i only have 192 MB of memory (it also states the CPU is 297 or 337 MHz, which i suspect may be due to the SpeedStep technology).

Can anybody help? Thanks in advance.

I couldn't find anything in the BIOS which states the installed memory size.

Are you using batteries or AC? Use the latter and recheck your CPU's speed. It's possible the RAM itself is faulty. I once tried a Crucial 256MB PC100 on a 600x and, no matter what I did, it only showed up as 128MB. You're best bet is to try a different stick.

Interestingly, i've just put it on AC power and have it running SuperPI to use all the CPU, but My Computer still says 297 MHz.

Check the BIOS for your CPU speed. What model is it?

It's showing up as 597 MHz now - must have been because i didn't reset it when i put it on AC, i just woke it from suspended.

Anybody got anymore ideas why it is only using 128 MB of the stick (i assume it gets the other 64 MB from the built in memory)?

Integrated Graphics? I know with a few of the computers at work that use integrated graphics Windows shows the RAM to be missing whatever the video holds aside.

been posted in some old threads, for the X20 you need a low-density module for 256MB RAM. It has 8 chips per side (16 total) instead of 4. like this:

now: X61, T42p
before: 600E, T23, X20, T40, X40, X31, T60
FS: Travel Bezel, 100GB drive (OEM Lenovo)

Hey,
Windows is the culprit, it misreports the speed of the processor. Download the Frequency ID utility from the intel site and it will report the real processor frequency....
