A31p not capable of using a 2915based wireless minipci card?

#1 Post by Blackhawk » Mon Jun 05, 2006 3:43 pm

Hi,

got a strange problem here with multiple laptops from the a31p series.

All laptops are working fine, but i wanted to update the internal 11 Mbps wireless card to something better. So i got my hands on some 2915abg wireless cards from intel, but there seems to be some sort of hardware conflict:

Windows XP itself detects the card correctly, but after the drivers are loaded, i will only get an error 10: Device cannot be started.

Not matter if safe mode or not - it won't work on any of the A31p series i got.

The same happened to me with an Atheros-based card from IBM.
They are detected correctly, but later i got the same error: Device cannot be started.

Today i loaded Knoppix 5.01, wich has support for 2915-based chipsets and here is what i got:

ipw2200: ipw2200-bss.fw request_firmware failed
ipw2200: Unable to load firmware: -2
ipw2200: failed to register network device
ipw2200: probe of 0000:02:02.0 failed with error -5

I could accept if one card or one Thinkpad would be defective, but multiple laptops and multiple cards? And even different operating systems?

The IBM wireless cards with 11 Mbps works....
Any idea what is going on here? Ond more, how i can find out what is causing these errors?

Do you get the '1802' Bios warning when you first start up?

I am currently using an Atheros card and was using a Intel 2915 before.

Both require a bios mod to remove the '1802' warning.

The Atheros card also requires a second mod to remove a 'too many ethernet controllers' warning.

Information on these mods can be found on this board in other threads.
