question about wireless

#1 Post by Jon A » Mon Jun 05, 2006 10:32 pm

been lookin to buy a T40 and came across the term 'upgradeable wireless'. I don't know for certain what the term means, although I am guessing it means there is no MPCI wireless card but you can install one to work with the already installed antenna. Can anyone tell me?

Basically, yes.

My guess is that it would come with one, but probably the older 802.11b kind. But you can easily swap that out with a newer one.

You are correct your T40 come with the antenna all you need is to buy an MPCI card and install it, Suggestion get a original IBM one so you don't run into trouble having all kinds of errors.

So let me jump on this thread. I just bought a very nice 2373-D26 and a WM3B2915ABG card.

Can anyone offer assistance as to where and how to install the card? Anfd then what drivers do I need?

Thanks
Regards,
Larry

You need to remove the keyboard (4 screws marked "3" on the bottom. Also the touchpad/palmrest (3 screws marked "4" plus the 5 screws along the front) Make sure you remember the locations. One of the front screws is bigger, and one of the "4" screws has a different thread. The wireless card location can be seen at that point. I believe your card is not on the BIOS's "white list" of allowable cards, but it will work fine if you run the "no-1802" hack/patch. Search for no-1802 in this forum for more info.

well check the IBM Maintainance Manual or the movies online on how to install it. You'll need to remove the palmrest area which requires the keyboard to come out too. The keyboard i think is 3 screws and they are labled as such on the bottom. The others is probably 5 of them for the palm.

The keyboard is number 3 screws on the bottom (look under your thinkpad now and see) and the palmrest is number 1. Remove the number 3s and then push on the back part of the keyboard between the F8 and F9 keys and the front should lift up so you can lift it up.Be careful when lifting the keyboard as its attached to a cable inside so don't rip it. Then after that remove number 1s and lift.

Here's the HMM

and here's the Movie database for the Thinkpad T4x Series

Specifically the MiniPCI one is

or just check the movies on how to remove the keyboard and all that as i said.
