question about 14.1 SXGA+ screens
question about 14.1 SXGA+ screens
A question for all of you who have 14" SXGA+ screens, how do you like that resolution on 14 inches? Does it present any problems? Can you change the resolution to 1024x768, and if so, is it as clear as it would be with 1024x768 as the native resolution?

I love it. It's perfect. I think 1024x768 is worthless, there just isn't enough screen real estate for me to be productive.
1024x768 will not be as clear on an SXGA+ screen as it is on a native XGA screen.

Changing the resolution will degrade image clarity but you can increase the default font size in Windows which helps quite a bit. To do this, right click on an unoccupied piece of your desktop, hit properties, appearance, select extra large fonts, apply.

Native resolution WILL NOT degrade image quality. Of course, changing resolution to non-default will make things blurry, but SXGA+ @1400x1050 will look as clear as XGA @ 1024x768.pae77 wrote:Changing the resolution will degrade image clarity but you can increase the default font size in Windows which helps quite a bit. Yeah, pae is saying that you should run an SXGA at 1400x1050 and an XGA at 1024x768. If you run an SXGA screen at 1024x768 (or anything other than 1400x1050), then it will degrade the image quality. So you should really buy a monitor at the resolution that you plan to use it in.andrey wrote:Native resolution WILL NOT degrade image quality. I tried to use my old computer's UXGA at SXGA resolution, but after a week or so I had to switch it back because it was giving me headaches. Which resolution you should get is really preference. If you have good eyesight, the sxga will probably be fine. Things can be a little small sometimes, but there are various ways of increasing the font size, and for my use, the added real estate makes it worth it. However, if you don't have the best eyesight, I would not get the SXGA. Some people just prefer the XGA, too. In the end, it's preference, and going to the store and seeing it for yourself is the best thing you could do.

I purchased the higher resolution screen, and I have had difficulty with font sizes. I purchased a piece of software called Liquid View, and that allowed me to have greater control over screen resolutions: if I wanted to use a lower resolution, Liquid View scaled things down while keeping quality reasonably intact.

I will not go less than SXGA+ or WSXGA+ on my laptops.
14" SXGA+ is the perfect resolution on a mobile system, in my opinion.
12.1" XGA, 14.1" XGA, 14.1" SXGA+, 15.0" XGA, 15.0" UXGA, 15.4" WXGA, 15.4" WSXGA+...I've had them all...but 14.1" SXGA+ has been my favorite. The 15" UXGA in my T42P was a better screen, but 14.1" keeps the small form factor I love.
12.1" XGA is really good too...however, XGA in general is too small for me, as I'm typically VNC'ing into other machines that run 1024x768.

I have SXGA+ too, and love it. But I have perfect vision. I am using 96 DPI fonts, and when I got it I tried to set lower DPI ... but the screen resolution couldn't handle lower DPIs, i.e. not enough dots to show the font right. One more thing, I don't use the clearType fonts and the font smoothing, since they blur the fonts, and I like it sharp.

SXGA+ Rocks!!!
Initially I was questioning myself if going for SXGA+ is worth the extra cost. I went ahead and bought it! Guess what... now I can't think of a laptop with any resolution lower than that!!!
If like me, you like to keep lot of windows open simultaneously, then believe me anything lesser than SXGA will suck.
No offence intended, but at times I pity my colleagues for their non-SXGA+ LCDs!!!
That said, it, of course, is a matter of choice whether you can read well a 96 DPI hi-res screen. Best way would be have a side-by-side comparision.

When i started the upgrades in my T40 Ati 32mb the first one was the SXGA+ and then the 128mb mobo and there was no difference in the way the LCD displayed it performs beautiful on both motherboards.xkeithx wrote:will these screens work in a t40 with the base 32mb video or do i need to upgrade the motherboard as well when upgrading the screen?

I initially had reservations about the SXGA+ screen at 14inches. After getting my T43, I can't imagine having to live with only XGA. Like others have said, that would suck.
Sometimes I'll drop the resolution to XGA on my SXGA+ panel and surf the web. It's a tad blurry, but it's not bad. FWIW, I have bad eyesight and I can tolerate SXGA+ and 14 inches. The LCD is liquid sharp. You will adjust.
