How to Clone Sticky???

#1 Post by JHEM » Tue Jun 06, 2006 12:45 pm

What's happened to the cloning directions and suggestions topic we used to have stickied?

Or am I simply suffering a senior moment?

Was there one? I dunno either. :?

I just recently cloned my drive using the floppy disk version of the EZ-Gig cloning program that comes with the Ultrabay Slim hard disk drive adapter.

I had the following question. Can one boot from the Ultrabay Slim hard disk drive adapter? I found the answer is YES, but see below.

I have also read that you cannot have (2) identically licensed copies of Win XP SP2 on the same computer without at least one of the installations being corrupted. When I tested booting from the Ultrabay Slim hard disk drive adapter, I removed the hard drive from the main hard drive slot.

Also, AFAIK, if Windows is installed on Drive C:, there will be a problem if there is another drive (unless it can be invisible to Windows) in the main hard drive slot, and you are trying to boot from the Ultrabay Slim hard disk drive adapter. This is because the drive in the main hard drive slot automatically becomes drive C:, causing any additional drives to become D:, E:, F:, etc.

I've got the latest release of Acronis and wanted to add a few thoughts and instructions on hot to use it reliably.

I thought there was a FAQ or sticky or how-to about cloning in general, but now I can't find it, so I'm probably mistaken.

I am sure a number of users would like to see a FAQ on cloning - one that give the tricks and traps of the various popular programs such as: Acronis, Ghost, and EZ-Gig (differences in the various recent versions should be covered as well). There are other things that should be included, such as drive letter changes and multiple copies of Windows on the same laptop. Now if you can just find a willing young pup (or experienced old dog) to write one up....... :)

[I don't think I fit in either catagory. :( ]

I raised this issue in Feb. ( http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=20817 ). If there is some interest in creating a FAQ, I'm still willing to participate. But Bill's response to my question is pretty much correct. That is, if you search for "cloning" and follow the instructions you'll find, it's not difficult.
