ADSL / dial-up network help sought

#1 Post by vital-analitix » Wed Jun 07, 2006 7:19 am

Hello

my present endavour depends on failsafe internet connectivity at certain times of the day / night. (particularly during the night when most activity happens from my location: it is night here and in the US it is during the day)

During this last month I have had several outages from my ADSL connection and had to manually dial-in through a modem with another ISP (different backbone to the US too) and then re-login into my services provided from the US.

I know I cannot simply use the modem: I'll loose the ADSL connection due to some quirk in the OS / XP.

Is there any way that I can have this failsafe / transparent?

But what If I was to set up some proxy server or so on the same machine? Alternatively are there any ADSL boxes out there that when the DSL connection is lost that a box automatically dials up and use the telephone dial-up modem to another ISP?

Many thanks in advance

Marinus (not a network specialist and out of touch with recent developments)

I use a Netopia router for a couple of clients for this purpose. The line drops for some reason and the Netopia reconnects automatically. Other routers will do the same thing. ... JD Hurst

Sorry to ask, I looked at their website and could not make much sense of it. Can you elaborate a bit more: what do I need to implement this and how is it finally working?

Many thanks in advance

my adsl modem-router has a option ''automatic reconnect";
just type the local IP address and browse through the device's settings.
enabling that function solved my similar problem then...

Hallo! Spreek je toevallig ook Nederlands? Zou me verwonderen als je in Nieuw Zeeland woont :-)

It's a plain and silly Topcom router, don't think the model makes any difference. Besides, the settings are different for about each and every modem. Just try connecting with the local ip address and check all settings.
I just use this modem for ADSL connection; all firewall and other settings are implemented on the Linksys wireless router that's attached to it.

Well, for courtesy of the other forum members I won't start talking in Dutch :-) but I was born in Amsterdam and grew up in Friesland. I did a 9 month stint in a job in Gilze-Rijen (just accross the border from the french fries country) in 1996 and did visit Antwerp, Brussels and some smaller towns like Brugge, Gent and Leuven.

Tell me, is a dial-up modem built in into the ADSL modem or is a seperate add-on? I used to travel a lot and if / when finances allow again then I hope to start travelling again. And I would love to have an ADSL modem that I can also use to dial out together with a build in firewall with SIF.

met vriendelijke groet, Marinus

Most laptops have a dial-up modem built in. Just look for a standard 4-prong RJ-11 jack. The 6-prong RJ-45 is ethernet.

I don't believe an ADSL modem would come with dial-up capabilities.

The Netopia is good but a bit tricky to set up for PPPoE (which is likely what you need). I have made notes, but initially I called Netopia support. They are most willing to walk you through the setup and connection. It is a reliable and semi-commercial piece of gear. Other routers are easier to use, but I am not in a position to recommend any particular one.

Thanks to all for your input.

I may be on the trail of something which does not require extra hardware, it is a software program. Do not know the ins and outs of it and have asked for a 30 day trial. Unfortunately I won't have time until this weekend to work on this.

You can easily set your network connection to use your LAN when available by default under XP and dial a connection on a modem line when the ADSL line goes out.

No hardware or additional software required.

Or am I missing something?

Hi James

I am using some server based software and when I loose the ADSL connection then I need to dial in. But then i need also to log back in to the application. What i want is that at "high risk times" (I know when the local telco normally takes their internet servers offline) then I want to dial in and share the connections transparanetly to the application. SO basically what i want is to have both connected and when once goes off line I don't notice anything and everything keeps working.
