T21, 1.16 BIOS & Battery charge

#1 Post by Artefact » Wed Jun 07, 2006 3:50 pm

Hi friends,

I wonder if anyone experiences same problems after BIOS upgrade to 1.16.
My Thinkpad T21 battery charge is now totally unpredictable. After I completely discharge the battery it doesn't charge again regardless is the laptop on or off. Then (after few on/off cycles) it starts charging and goes up to its limit which is 39.5 Wh out of 42 (33 cycles). Windows (with all latest IBM drivers) can't recognize when the laptop in working from battery and when AC power is connected. And, according to mobile meter, it doesn't charge when working from AC power (0.01A current).
What do I have to do? I consider downgrading BIOS, but which verion to choose...

Thanks in advance.
A.

OK, let's change the question. :-) Have anyone had problems with battery state/charge recognized after BIOS upgrade?

It's a pity nobody answers this one. I would also like to find out.
I'm thinking on updating my Bios but don’t know if I should. Current version is 1.02a and runs smooth with dual boot Windows XP and Ubuntu Linux.

I'm afraid I don't know what the answer is in relation to a downgraded battery charge performance from a bios upgrade. One would assume that the technical folks at IBM would not have made such a blunder!

What I do know is that the power drain in a BIOS upgrade (for example, LCD default reset to full brightness) can be the last straw that breaks a dead/dying battery. Have you checked the charging state with another battery? I'd be inclined to blame the battery in the first instance. Ok, I admit there is a thought in the back of my mind that one could boost the sales of replacement batteries by altering the bios upgrade in a clever way. But of course, this is just a hypothesis.
Cheers
