Yes you can, it's even good for the battery. Batteries don't like heat, so taking them out of the warm notebook can't be bad. Furthermore, you can avoid unnecessary charge/discharge cycles.

Of course you'll loose all unsaved data in the event of a power outage.

Yes I just tried. My intention was not to extend the battery life but to optimize the ventilation. However I found that the temperatures of both the CPU and GPU actually went up by about 3 degrees celcius after the battery was removed.

Personally, I wouldn't remove the battery while on AC (i.e., hot swapping it is a no-no.)
