Will Thinkpad T42 supports 133FSB processors?

#1 Post by nartac » Wed Jun 07, 2006 7:25 pm

I have a thinkpad T42 type 2374 for sale and a potential buyer asked me if this laptop supports 133fsb processors. I wonder if anyone on this forum who is an expert on thinkpads know the answer to this. I suppose he wants to run it with a modded chip. I appreciate your time and reply.

No, it will not. The T42 runs the 855 chipset that supports 100MHz opperation only. If you installed a 133MHz chip, it will run at 100MHz only (i.e. a 2.13GHz chip would DOWN clock to 1.6GHz).

I thought the FSB on the T42 was 400MHz. :?

133MHz is a strange FSB for most laptops like the T42; did you mean memory?

T42= 400FSB NO way a 133FSB CPU will work in it.

I imagine he is thinking in install a PIII M CPU in his T42.

Yeah, see that is the only thing I can see since the PIII had a 100/133MHz FSB...but whyyyyy? :)

thanks guys for the reply and discussion on this. To be honest, I don't quite understand all that was said but I get what you wanted to get through. I would think for my desktop, the cpu supposedly runs up to 800fsb so devide that by 4 that would make my system only take up to 200fsb (if I'm not overclocking that is).

I appreciate your expertise.

T42 is a "quad pumped" 100mhz FSB (resulting in 400mhz as advertised, though that is not really so)

Yup - I was getting mightily worried at some of the earlier posts :p :D.

I don't believe the 533Mhz i.e. Dothan '0' versions (730, 740, 750) would even boot on the i855 chipset. They might boot downclocked but I'm just not sure. All the 533mhz (133mhz quad pumped) wil run on the i915 with DDR2 (though I believe the 915 can support DDR RAM, as there are indeed some dekstop motherboards with dual RAM slots. The pinouts are the same aren't they? It will only support a 400mhz Dothan '5' version (725, 735, 745, 755 etc) or Banias. Also Celeron-M's but let's not go there.
