wireless connectivity issue - can't connect with wifi

#1 Post by NS » Thu Jun 08, 2006 2:39 am

I really need your help this time. Serious big question this time.

I cannot connect to the wireless network in my school at all. I tried the same method like all my other remaining TPs, but still cannot connect. It requires windows to detect the wireless setting but when i open the wireless setting properties box, i see 2 tab box but the wireless connection tab box is missing. I restart the comp but still the same. I had done this for 3 times and took me 1 hour but still nothing happens. I tried access connection but connect halfway once it detects IP, it loses connection. I repair the connection also no use. Now i use control panel to go to network connection and open wireless network connection properties box, it opens but the wireless radio keeps on switching itself off and no way to switch it on. The black dialog box refused to come out. Now, i keep on clicking on the wireless graph at the bottom of th screen and nothing happens. The CPU is running at 100%. What happened. I need to use this for my exam tonight.

Please don't tell me about what is going on at the back but i would like you to tell me how to solve this problem. Thanks. I need the computer to connect to the wireless. This is the only acceptable model for my school exam.

BTW: R52 1858-5UA 1.73Mhz

What else did you try? Did you use the control panel to configure it back? Did your school lock your wireless account?

They lock my account for what? Just because i bully you in the games? No way. BTW: they don't lock student's account. They will send the student straight to the school disciplinary committe and get expelled from there. No big deal.

I think you have brought up the word access connection. What should i do with access connection? Reformat the whole computer again? Oh please, i got no time for this. I need to do my practical exam on this comp tonight. Please don't tell me to use recovery. I had done this and it is useless.

Thank you, Vectorspace for your quick reply.

Emmm..... I think you should know who am i and my talent.

I am not sure this will work for your TP. Can you go to control panel. Go to add/remove hardwares. Remove your access connection from there. Ignore all the errors or whatever you see on your screen. Ignoring those dialog boxes won't harm your computer than the state it is in now.

*Yes, i sent a complain to your school that day regarding you and your friend* So i find this question interesting when you bring it up. I thought your account was locked. But who knows, *disappointed*

Excuse me, Vectorspace can you please stay on topic. How to reconnect to the internet again without the access connection? Thanks.

Log off your computer or restart it. Then go to wireless connection dialog box to look for that wireless tab and click that one and tick the checkbox and highlight your network SSID name. Click ok. Wait for a while and prayed that your account was not locked by your school. Then if error message comes out, your accoutn is confirmed locked but if no error messages pop out, you are done and i will be very disappointed with your school.

Wait!!! Don't count your chickens before they are hatched. Wait!!! I am connecting now. Wait!!!

Hahaha... You got it right. My account is locked. [censored]. Why they locked my wireless account? I can surf using the school computers but not my own TP. *scratch* why? Do you have any idea?

When i type my password and username for logging into my school wireless account, i was presented with this dialog box: You cannot log in using your wireless account because your account is currently locked. Please see the admin in charge to unlock your account. Thank you.

^Why?

Ask your school admin. You need to go and tell them the reasons for attacking me in the games and in the forums together with all your friends. Bye bye. !!!

In this wonderful near-complete thinkpads.com support community index,

you can find this article: 9. General 13. Wireless Fidelity Nonfunctional pg. 13

"Problem Description 1:
When the backlight on an R31 was fixed, the Wi-Fi ceased to work –perhaps the antennas got messed up? Any other way to get Wi-Fi other than an external adapter?wa8yxm
Problem Solution 1:
Any wireless signal at all? Perhaps tech forgot to reattach the antenna leads inside the mini-pci card bay. To check remove the access door covering the bay (this is the cover that directly under the hard drive). There should be to small connectors plugged into the card (a black & grey one).
It is possible that the primary antenna lead was damaged during the replacement of the backlight, either pinched or cut, if so it will have to be replaced. Even if the primary antenna (which is inside the LCD casing) is inoperable, the auxiliary antenna (built inside the base near the left hinge) should be able to get signal.
Visit IBM or Lenovo website and download hardware maintenance manual (HMM); it shows the correct routing and connection of the leads.
wa8yxm

Problem Description 2:
Every 5 minutes or so, the internal wireless card on this R40 turns off and, although it says it’s on, it can’t catch anything. Only by disabling and enabling the wireless card can it get back on. It does this quite often. ThinkPad R

Problem Solution 2:
On Access Connections (on ThinkVantage) or Intel® PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini Adapter icon on the right side bar of the start menu bar, disable automatic radio control. laz

Problem Description 3:
Wi-Fi card having been enabled increases processor usage dramatically when the laptop is a long distance away from the router (being near poses no problems). Interestingly, having the LCD monitor turned off decreases processor usage. simonchen
Problem Explanation:
It might be spyware. Use Process Explorer (as for 2006, http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/P ... lorer.html) to track down any suspicious processes. Deckard
Problem Description 4:
In a Z60t, “Deferred procedure calls” come up, and the wireless consumes much of the processor. roadwarrior
Problem Solution 4:
Something is wrong with the Atheros chipset. Changing the wireless card can help. roadwarrior

For further assistance, refer to ‘#10 Wireless radio off’ article under chapter 9 General on pages 12 and 13.
"

9. General 10. Wireless radio off pg. 12-13

"Problem description:
While trying to disconnect IBM ThinkPad R40 from the existing internet connection and experiment with another router, the user disables the wireless connection. When the user tried to re-enable the connection, s/he failed.
It says “Radio off”.ju421019

Problem Explanation:
If a ThinkVantage wireless application or Access IBM is being used, perhaps the account set for 1 router is being applied to the other. Or… double click on the Intel® PRO Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini Adapter icon on the start menu’s sidebar, click FIND WLAN option, and the wireless radio will turn on. Or… go to properties on My Computer, and disable and the enable wireless card. ThinkPad R

NOTE: ThinkVantage wireless application provided under Lenovo and the Access Connections application distributed by IBM may differ slightly in form.

Can you connect using UTP CAT 5E cable from your home? If can, then your school wireless account is the main problem not your computer. BTW: what's your school ISP provider name? Maybe that could be the cause. They locked your TP wireless MAC or LAN MAC address.

<Sorry for the above insults> I take back all my words. Sorry.

Ok, guys. I can surf the net with my wireless but my main question now is how to reinstall the access connection back into my computer? As you know that all TP, when you press Fn and F5, you will come to a black dialog box with the wireless radio to enable you to on and off it. Now, i can access that but the dialog box is shorter than normal and distorted. The access connection at the bottom right of the screen is gone and i used control panel to try my luck to get it back but who knows the black dialog screen also go missing. Now when i press Fn F5, no response from the computer. It looked like the utility was disabled somewhere in the computer but i can't find it. I looked throught the whole of Lenovo/IBM support page but i can't find it. I phoned the support centre and what i hear is: All our officers are engaged on the line, your call is important to us, please hold and we will attend to you shortly. I had been holding the phone for 30 minutes and this is what they call, reply me shortly... Very "good" service.

EDIT: Ok, now you got no choice but to reformat your system to get back what you want originally. Please do a backup before reformatting and good luck. Do these steps to connect to your school wireless setting with access connection.

· Install and maintain up to date Anti-virus software

· Endeavor to ensure that the latest service pack and hot fixes for their system is installed, regardless of the operating system type

· Install and operate personal firewall software where ever possible

· Comply with all legal and statuary requirements

· Comply with all Singapore Polytechnic Policies

· Not install or operate unauthorized wireless networks including ad-hoc networks

· Not connect to the wireless network and untrusted networks at the same time. (ie you must not dial up to an ISP while connected to the wireless network)

· Use only the secure network for access to confidential or sensitive information

· Protect any encryption key issued to them and ensure the confidentiality of that key

· Read the policies and instructions issued by Singapore Polytechnic

· Avoid using high-bandwidth applications on the wireless network

· Not rely solely on the wireless network for high-availability systems

You must to comply with these school rules:

Users shall not upload from or download into, send or post, enter or publish anything that is confidential, distasteful or prejudicial to the good name of the Polytechnic, or otherwise objectionable or illegal as defined under the laws of the Republic of Singapore onto the local or international Bulletin Boards, World Wide Webs and other Internet communication channels. In addition, users shall not upload or download, send or post information, messages or postings or otherwise do anything in relation to the Computer Resources that is against the public interest, public order, national, racial and religious harmony or which offends against good taste or decency or is otherwise indecent, obscene, pornographic, defamatory or would lead to a lawsuit or criminal charges.

All the best....
